Toyota patents new twin-turbo V8 engine

This one is still kind of up in the air. After all, Toyota has largely removed the V8 engine from its lineup and replaced it with more fuel-efficient options, especially in the wake of how popular hybrid and electric cars are becoming. However, last Thursday it was revealed that they just filed a patent for a new twin-turbo V8 engine. The application details a new engine with two turbochargers (also known as superchargers) that are placed on the top of the engine block. This could mean that Toyota is planning a “hot v” engine, one that has very little lag and is actually more efficient for it. It’s also going to be more compact, which means it can fit in more passenger cars. We’ll keep you posted!

New Toyota hydrogen engine in the works

Toyota’s latest endeavor in the world of green cars is a new internal combustion engine that actually uses hydrogen as fuel. This results in a car that feels and sounds like a traditional gasoline-powered car but one that emits far fewer emissions into the air and is significantly more efficient. Toyota has placed this innovative engine in a Toyota Corolla Hatchback and will be entering said vehicle into the 2021 Super Taikyu 24 Hour Endurance Series from May 21 to 23, 2021 to see how it fares when it comes to the track.

Is an electric Toyota Land Cruiser coming?

The Orlando Toyota Land Cruiser will officially be retired after this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s fading from existence – after all, it’s an icon of the brand. It’s going to be available in other parts of the world and rumor has it that there’s a chance it could be all-electric in the coming years. Toyota recently entered into a partnership with BHP, an Australian mining company, and retrofitted a Toyota Land Cruiser with a battery-electric powertrain to see how it fared and whether or not it should be pushed into the consumer market and so far, so good.

New Toyota electrified SUVs to be produced in Indiana

We mentioned earlier this month that two new Toyota electrified models were headed our way in the upcoming year – two new SUVs, to be exact. However, we weren’t given any specifics on what TYPE of vehicles they would be (hybrids, plug-ins, all-electric, etc.). More news has been tacked onto this initial story; Toyota announced that it’s investing $803 million into the Indiana plant and adding 1,400 new jobs in order to produce the aforementioned SUVs right here in the states.

That’s the roundup for this week – if you have questions or want to schedule a test drive for ANY of our new or used cars, call us! We’re open seven days a week until 10pm at (407) 298-4500.

Earlier this week in our news roundup we touched on the fact that Toyota had recently filed a patent for a new twin-turbo V8 engine. No one knows exactly which car or truck it’ll go into or if it will ever even come to fruition, but excitement is high among drivers who can appreciate this type of power in their ride. We’ve discussed turbocharged engines before and what they can lend to the driving experience, but today we’re delving into twin-turbo engines and how they can affect your drive time just in case this new patent ever makes its way into the lineup. Check it out.

twin turbo engine

What is a twin-turbo?

If you recall, a turbocharged engine is an engine that uses turbine power and forced induction to push extra compressed air into the engine’s combustion chamber. Why? Because this extra air means that extra fuel has to be pushed in as well (to maintain the fuel/air ratio), and you get a boost in power. The extra fuel combusts at a faster rate than a normal engine, so you can put the pedal to the metal. You’ll find this type of engine available in the iconic Orlando Toyota Supra.

The most common twin-turbo configurations

A twin-turbo, on the other hand, is when you actually have TWO turbochargers pushing extra compressed air into the combustion chamber. The turbochargers can be different sizes and can be laid out in different configurations. Here are the three types of setups you’ll typically see:

  • Parallel: This is when there are two turbochargers of the same size are situated parallel to one another and each turbocharger receives half of the extra exhaust gases. This layout is best suited to V6 and V8 engines because each turbocharger can be assigned to one cylinder bank and reduce the amount of exhaust piping needed. Parallel twin-turbo engines reduce lag, which can be an issue in turbocharged cars, by using two smaller turbo chargers instead of one large one.
  • Sequential: Sequential twin-turbo engines utilize one turbocharger for lower speeds and one turbocharger (or sometimes both) for higher speeds. This setup is supposed to offset the issue where turbochargers are unable to provide a boost of power when RPMs are low. Typically, a smaller turbocharger is used for a boost at low speeds and a larger turbocharger is used for a boost at higher speeds.
  • Series: This type of twin-turbo setup is when the turbochargers are set up in a series (go figure). The output from the first one is then further compressed by the second one. This leads to much higher pressure and boost than you’d normally get.

We have no idea which setup (if any of them) the new Toyota V8 engine will utilize; rumor has it that right now, it will be a “hot v” configuration where the turbochargers are actually mounted in between cylinder heads and the flow of fresh charge and exhaust gases is reversed. We’ll have to wait and see what’s unveiled in the coming months.

If you have questions about turbochargers, twin-turbo setups, or just engines in general, call us! Toyota of Orlando is open seven days a week at (407) 298-4500 and we’re located just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall.

Are you thinking about heading to the beach this weekend to get your share of salt air? Things are heating up in Central Florida and it’s the perfect time to hit the sand. However, driving on the beach – especially if you drive along the shore, as you can in New Smyrna and Daytona Beach – can do a number on your car if you don’t take the proper steps before and after. Toyota of Orlando’s car care techs gave us a list of things you should do before and after you hit the beach to best protect your ride. Surf’s up!

Toyota of Orlando tips

What to do before driving on the beach

  • Before you head to the beach, it’s best to prep your car with a good detailing. Not only will it look better for it, it’ll also help protect your ride from the elements. Wash and wax your car, applying a solid coat of quality wax to the exterior. This will help ward off the sun’s harmful UV rays and also put a barrier between your car’s paint and the salt air. Remember, salt combined with moisture can cause oxidization and subsequently, rust.
  • Air down your tires a bit once you get close. This gives them more surface area and will make it easier for you to drive on the soft sand without sinking into it and getting stuck. It’s also a good idea to throw some cardboard in the trunk if you have it, as well as a small shovel in case you do get stuck.
  • Bring a jug of water to rinse feet. Sand can be pretty abrasive to your car’s interior, especially if you have SofTex or leather seats. Make sure everyone has clean feet before you head home!
  • Throw up your sunshade when you park. There’s rarely shade on the beach and leaving your car to bake in the sun all day is bad for the interior. A sunshade in the windshield will help prevent fading and cracking of your interior and also keep things cooler for when it’s time to leave.

What to do after driving on the beach

  • Air your tires back up. Driving on the pavement with underinflated tires will cut your fuel efficiency and also wear your tires out faster.
  • Rinse your car off. Remember, salt + moisture (a.k.a. saltwater) can do real damage to your car over time. Be sure to wash your car thoroughly to remove any traces of salt, and don’t forget to get under the car, rinsing the wheels, chassis, etc. to ensure everything is salt-free and sand-free. And you should always rinse before you wash with soap and a sponge – if you wash while there’s still sand on the car, it can cause swirls and scratches in the paint.
  • Vacuum out the interior. As noted, sand is abrasive and can ruin your interior (plus, the novelty of it wears off once you’ve left the beach). Wipe your seats and vacuum out the interior so everything is back to normal before you hit the road again.

Need car detailing supplies to rinse the salt and sand off after driving on the beach? Call us – Toyota of Orlando’s parts store is open seven days a week at (407) 298-4500 and we’re conveniently located just off I-4 near the Millenia Mall at 3575 Vineland Road.

Toyota develops method to stop catalytic converter theft

Did you know that as a Prius owner, you have a higher chance of having your catalytic converter stolen right off of your car? Weird but true. Thefts of this car part have been on the rise over the past few years because hybrid car catalytic converters have more precious metals (palladium, rhodium, and platinum, to be exact) inside of them than other vehicles. This makes them more valuable to steal, dismantle, and sell. However, Toyota is taking steps to stop the theft – they’ve created a way to covertly mark the catalytic converters so they can be tracked after they’re stolen. The markers will be police-approved and 50,000 of them will roll out initially; all owners have to do is contact their local dealership to have one fitted on their car.

New 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser spotted

New spy photos of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser – without camo on – have been leaked, and things are looking good. We can’t show it here (sorry, but we’ll be sure to let you know when the OFFICIAL photos drop), but it’s looking like this new Toyota SUV is sleeker than ever for its big debut. It’s reminiscent of a Lexus LX with lean lines, sleek curves, and a powerful presence if that gives you any idea (or you can just Google it). Remember, it’s likely that it won’t be available in North America so the only way to get your hands on one is if you live overseas.

Toyota predicts 70% of sales to be electric by 2030

Big news for green drivers – Toyota is predicting that by 2030, 70% of all of their sales will be electrified with a majority of that number being hybrids. While gasoline models will still be available, they’re hoping to make their way toward carbon neutrality by the end of this decade and electric cars, hydrogen cars, and hybrid cars are the way to get there. We’re excited to see which new Toyotas make their way into the lineup to help achieve this goal (and don’t forget, you can test drive any and all of our eco-friendly new Toyotas today at Toyota of Orlando).

Toyota pairs with ENEOS for Woven City

We’ve already filled you in Toyota’s Woven City – the city of the future being built over in Japan. However, there’s more news on that front. Toyota has officially partnered with ENEOS, a Japanese petroleum company, to build a hydrogen fuel system that will power the city as cleanly as possible. ENEOS is well-versed in this realm – it currently runs 45 hydrogen fueling stations throughout Japan to support hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Toyota Mirai. ENEOS plans to install a hydrogen refueling station near the city and produce green hydrogen to further power the city itself.

If you’re shopping for a used car, you know that it can seem a little bit intimidating. It’s not like a new car, where you know exactly where it’s been before you bring it home. Used cars can be a great investment, but there’s always risk involved if you don’t do your due diligence in ensuring it’s a quality vehicle. We’ve given you tips for Orlando used car shopping before and today we’re here to share a few more – check out these seven surefire signs you shouldn’t sign the dotted line on a used vehicle.

Toyota of Orlando tips

Look for these signs when shopping Orlando used cars

Sign #1: It smells like cigarette smoke. Unless you like, enjoy that smell. If you get into a car and even smell a faint scent of cigarette smoke, forget it. This smell is notoriously difficult to get rid of and it’s likely that the seller had the used car cleaned before they showed it to you, so the scent will come back even stronger over time. No amount of air freshener can cover it up permanently so think twice before buying.

Sign #2: No maintenance or repair records. If an owner can’t seem to produce any maintenance or repair records or offer any evidence that the car has been cared for regularly, proceed with caution. Sure, some drivers don’t keep all that stuff but it can also be a sign that the car hasn’t been on a car care routine, which can shorten its lifespan and cause you problems down the road.

Sign #3: Mechanical bandaids. If you spot evidence of mechanical “bandaids” – i.e. temporary and cheap fixes to bigger problems, reconsider purchasing this Orlando used car. You don’t want to have to shell out big bucks down the road to put a permanent fix in place.

Sign #4: Dirty oil. Check the oil of the car you’re considering buying. If it’s black, dark brown, or has flecks of dirt in it, strongly consider if this is the right ride. Dirty oil means the car hasn’t been cared for and likely hasn’t been getting routine oil changes over its lifetime, which can lead to expensive issues down the road.

Sign #5: Dirty or nonexistent coolant. You should also check the coolant reservoir while you’re under the hood of the Orlando used car you’re considering. If the coolant is gone or it’s got debris in it, your cooling system could have an issue in the near future because it obviously hasn’t been maintenanced.

Sign #6: Signs of neglect. If there are obvious signs of neglect in the used car, be sure to thoroughly examine it and ask lots of questions before you buy. Things like stains and rips in the interior, scratches and dents on the exterior, bad smells, etc. can all indicate that the car hasn’t been well-cared for and might be problematic in the future.

Sign #7: Accident damage. Accident damage is always a giveaway. If the car has been in an accident its value is automatically less and it may have problems from the accident that you’ll have to deal with in the future, so be sure to ask about it and get full details.

Things are getting dark when it comes to the Toyota Prius, and in the best way. A new teaser video from Toyota has revealed that the iconic Toyota hybrid will soon be joining the Nightshade Edition lineup, bringing an edgy new look to the already sleek and sporty hatchback. Toyota of Orlando has details!

An all-new Nightshade Edition is coming

You’ve probably seen our coverage of the Nightshade Edition lineup in the past (and if you haven’t, then get reading). This lineup boasts special paint colors, blacked-out badging and other exterior and interior features, and new wheels. It’s also always a possibility that slight appearance modifications will be made with new rear diffusers or front grilles, as well as tweaked headlights. Plus, it’s a limited edition – only a certain number of Nightshade Edition Toyotas are made every year, so you’re getting something truly exclusive.

We aren’t precisely sure what the new Nightshade Edition of the Orlando Toyota Prius will offer, but we can tell from the teaser video that it’s giving off some serious edge. Unique paint colors and blacked-out badging is a definite on this new hybrid, and we’re sure that small tweaks will be made everywhere else to make it stand out from the everyday lineup. We’ll keep you posted as details roll in so you can get your hands on one when they arrive.

Why drive the Toyota Prius?

The new Toyota Highlander is already incredible to look at – since its redesign, it’s offering a sleek but sporty exterior and a plush interior packed with everything you need for a comfortable and – dare we say – enjoyable drive time. It’s modern, sophisticated, and the complete opposite of what you’d expect from a family-oriented vehicle. However, Toyota is introducing an all-new special edition in 2022 that promises to ratchet the Toyota Highlander’s style up even further, and our Orlando Toyota dealership has the details.

new Toyota SUV

Introducing the 2022 Toyota Highlander Bronze Edition! This all-new limited edition model will be available in the hybrid model only will arrive at dealerships at some point later this year. Here are the details that our Orlando Toyota dealership has managed to gather so far:

  • The new Bronze Edition of this sleek Toyota SUV will be a hybrid drivetrain, as noted, and will be available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
  • It comes in two new paint colors – Cement and Wind Chill Pearl.
  • The exterior and interior will be studded with bronze accents to add a level of uniqueness not found on the regular models. The exterior boasts 18″ bronze wheels while the interior is showcasing bronze stitching, bronze doorsills that are also illuminated, and a mid-century modern design is integrated into the SofTex trimmed seats. You’ll also find floor mats that have bronze badging on them.

limited-edition Toyota model

This new special edition Toyota Highlander also has exceptional features woven into its unique design. Here’s what comes standard:

  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Ambient lighting integrated into the dash
  • Puddle lamps with the Highlander logo
  • A digital rearview mirror
  • A hands-free power liftgate
  • LED daytime running lights in a strip design
  • A 1500W power outlet
  • A 10-way power driver’s seat with memory
  • Height and tilt adjustments for the passenger’s seat

On top of all of that, the hybrid performance found in this new Toyota special edition is exceptional. The rear-wheel drive system has a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when necessary; it operated with no connection between the transmission and rear wheels to help prevent your front wheels from slipping. This also helps to prevent understeer as well as help you tackle slippery or uneven terrain like a pro (so pack up the camping gear).

This particular model of the new Toyota Highlander is also especially fuel-efficient. It has a high-efficiency 2.5L four-cylinder engine under the hood alongside two electric motors, which means it gets 36 mpg. This high fuel efficiency means you save money on gas and also utilize fewer natural resources, so you can feel better about your time behind the wheel.
