How to tow your own car safely
Have you ever had to tow your Orlando Toyota? We mean actually tow your own car, not use your car to tow something else like a boat or a trailer. We’ve given you plenty of tips on how to safely tow with your vehicle, but pulling your own car behind you is a different story. Whether you’re moving cross-country and bringing your Orlando Toyota along for the ride or towing it in for repairs at an auto repair shop, use these tips to do it safely and efficiently!

What you should know before you tow
To get started, here are some basic points to take into consideration before you tow your Orlando Toyota with another car or truck.
- The car or truck that’s doing the towing should be larger and heavier than the car being towed. You’ll need more acceleration power AND braking power to safely get both vehicles to their final destination.
- NO ONE – not even your four-legged friends – should be in the vehicle that’s being towed at any point during the journey. It’s illegal and also extremely dangerous.
- It’s best to tow your car on a flatbed trailer or at least a dolly, which is a small trailer that lifts your car’s front tires off the ground. If you’re using a chain or tow rope, it should only be for a very short distance and at very low speeds. Using a chain or rope is dangerous – the vehicle being towed doesn’t have active brakes and could rear-end the vehicle towing it, the rope could break, etc. It’s best to use a trailer whenever possible.
Tips for towing your Toyota
Once you’ve safely hooked up your car to the car you’ll be towing with (and make sure you check with our Orlando auto service experts for specifications if you’re unsure as to how you should hook things up), you can hit the road. Here are a few tips for doing so safely.
Tip #1: Go easy on your braking. You’ll want to take it easy when it comes to braking while towing your car – any sudden or sharp braking can result in damage to the brakes of the vehicle that’s towing. Pulling a car means a lot of weight is behind you, so you should slow your vehicle gradually and give your brakes a fighting chance.
Tip #2: Slow down. Slow down when towing your Orlando Toyota behind you. It’s even acceptable to go under the speed limit in this particular situation – remember, you’ll need more distance to bring both vehicles to a stop and the slower you go, the easier this is to achieve.
Tip #3: Make sure all lighting works and that you use your turn signals and mirrors. Make sure your brake lights and turn signals work, and turn on the hazard lights of the vehicle that you’re towing. Also, be sure to signal well ahead of any movements you make to let other drivers know your intentions, and use your mirrors to check and ensure you have the space to move around.
Tip #4: Be especially careful when turning. Be very careful when turning and avoid making sharp turns when towing a car behind your car. Sharp or sudden turns could result in damage to both vehicles.
Tip #5: Change lanes with caution. Be sure to change lanes with caution – you have to account for enough space for BOTH vehicles.

Toyota News Roundup: April 29
It’s been a busy week in the world of Toyota and our Orlando Toyota dealership is here with the latest roundup of Toyota news to keep you in the loop. Check it out!

Two new SUVs coming: Big news for all your SUV drivers – two new models will be hitting the market before you know it. Rumor has it that Toyota will be retiring the Toyota Sequoia (similarly to how it put the Toyota Land Cruiser out to pasture this year) and introducing two new 8-seater, 3-row SUVs designed for Millenial families that are always on the go. One will be badged as a Lexus, but both will likely be fuel-efficient hybrids and include cool and convenient features like hands-free driving systems and a remote parking feature. Additionally, both will be built right here in the US at the Indiana plant.
Spy photos of the new Toyota Land Cruiser emerge: The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series may have been retired in the US, but an all-new 300 series is coming to the rest of the world. Spy shots have been taken and reveal that the new interaction of this much-loved classic will a longer and wider front bumper, a rear end that looks similar to the popular Prado model, and a completely redesigned interior cabin that focuses on easy access to infotainment and the instrument cluster. We’ll keep you posted as new photos and more information are dropped.
Toyota to race combustible hydrogen car: When it comes to going green, Toyota is definitely a front-runner. And now they’re taking their technology to the track – reportedly, they’ll be racing in the 4-hour Super Taikyu race in Fuji in a vehicle powered by combustible hydrogen. It sounds weird – how do you combust hydrogen like you do gas? We’re no engineers, but it is possible and can lend a lot of speed to your car. However, it cuts way back on your fuel efficiency and also emits nitrous oxide, which is a greenhouse gas that hydrogen cars try to cut out of the equation, so we don’t see this technology coming to a dealership near you anytime soon.
Toyota Sienna Woodland introduced: The Toyota Sienna has always been cooler than the average minivan (hence the Swagger Wagon moniker). However, it’s taking cool to an all-new level with a new special edition model that’s coming to market in the fall. The Toyota Sienna Woodland special edition comes with standard all-wheel drive and more ground clearance for a more versatile performance. Additionally, it’ll still pack a hybrid drivetrain and offer features like 18″ wheels, roof racks with crossbars, a 1,500 watt outlet, and two cool new paint colors. Plus, it’ll be able to tow up to 3,500 lbs without batting an eye.
Stay tuned for more Toyota news and in the meantime, shop our inventory in person! Toyota of Orlando is located just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall at 3575 Vineland Road. You can call to get more info or schedule your test drive at (407) 298-4500.
When it comes to choosing your next Toyota SUV, it can be challenging. How can you possibly wade through all the options to find the perfect fit for your drive time needs? We get it, and we want to not only make your shopping experience as easy as it can get but also to find you the perfect new SUV. Today we’re talking two of our most popular options that shoppers often have a hard time choosing between – the Toyota Highlander and the Toyota 4Runner.
At first glance, they might not seem that different – after all, they’re both pretty spacious SUVs. However, when you look more closely, you’ll see that they’re each pretty unique drive time solutions – neither one is one-size-fits-all. We’re breaking down the basics to help you better decide.
The Family-Friendly Toyota Highlander

If you’re looking for a family-friendly vehicle that still offers a high degree of style and the best tech, take the Orlando Toyota Highlander for a test drive. This much-loved Toyota SUV pretty much has it all when it comes to comfort, safety, and efficiency. It can seat up to eight inside and has a roomy cargo area (16 cubic feet, to be exact!). Here are some other highlights it has to offer when you climb behind the wheel:
- It’s available in both hybrid and gasoline-powered models so you can opt for that extra fuel efficiency and green performance if you choose.
- It comes with top safety tech including the pre-collision system, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, safety connect services, all-wheel drive, lane keep assist, and more. It also has the LATCH system to make car seat installation as easy as possible, as well as 3-point seatbelts for all seating positions.
- This Orlando Toyota SUV additionally offers major convenience features for families, including Qi wireless charging for devices, hands-free phone capabilities, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, an integrated backup camera and Bird’s Eye View camera, and Driver Easy Speak.
The Rugged and Versatile Toyota 4Runner

The Orlando Toyota 4Runner, on the other hand, is all about versatility. It’s great for getting around town and is suitable for a family, but its real forte lies in the off-road arena. It’s decked out with features designed to make it as capable as possible when you take things off the pavement, including:
- A 4.0L V6 engine that offers 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque
- Full-time four-wheel drive with limited-slip differential and active traction control, as well as CRAWL Control and Multi-Terrain Select
- Reinforced body-on-frame construction and an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System
- A multi-terrain ABS system
- Towing capabilities of up to 5,000 lbs
Plus, it can seat up to eight (based on the model you choose) and offers tons of great entertainment and safety tech, including a backup camera, a HomeLink universal transceiver, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluetooth hands-free streaming.
Which will you choose? The best way to decide is to get behind the wheel of both, and you can do just that at Toyota of Orlando. Call (407) 298-4500 to schedule your test drive – we’re open seven days a week until 10 pm at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 near the Millenia Mall.
6 quick ways to prepare your car for summer
Have you stepped outside lately? Things are definitely heating up in Central Florida and summer is upon us. That means NOW is the best time to prepare your car for the impending heat, and we’ve got Orlando Toyota tips from our auto service experts to help make it happen.
Summer can take a serious toll on your ride. The warmer temps mean your car has to work harder to stay cool, especially if you’re traveling at high speeds or over long distances. The pavement is also hot, which means your tires can take more of a beating this time of year.
However, if you prep your car before the heat rolls in, it shouldn’t be too difficult to take on summer. Here are six quick ways to do it.
Prep your car for the heat with summer auto service

#1: Have a tire inspection done. When was the last time you had an auto service pro take a look at your tires? As noted, hot pavement can do a number on them so you want to ensure they’re in the best shape possible and also inflated to the right PSI. This will not only keep your fuel efficiency where it should be, but also make them last longer.
#2: Check your A/C system. There’s no worse time of year to have your A/C conk out than summer. Check it out – have our Toyota of Orlando techs do a quick inspection to ensure it’s working properly and doesn’t need maintenance or repairs and can keep you cool all summer long.
#3: Make sure all fluids are full and clean. Take a peek under the hood to ensure all fluids are clean and full. This especially applies to oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and wiper fluid. You want your car to stay cool while it’s working hard, and it needs all of the above to do so.
#4: Wax your car. Now is also a great time to wax your Orlando Toyota. A coat or two of quality wax will help protect it from fading and damage that comes from being out in intense sunlight. Ask our auto service experts which one works best for you.
#5: Invest in a few accessories. Now might also be a great time to invest in a few accessories to keep your car cool and protect it from the sun. A sunshade for your windshield will protect the interior and keep your cabin cooler, and a steering wheel cover can prevent you from burning your hands. Additionally, if you haven’t tinted your windows yet, consider doing so at our Orlando auto service center for added protection.
#6: Check your windshield wipers. We all know that with scorching summer temps also comes thunderstorm weather, particularly in the afternoons. Make sure your wipers can handle wet weather and if they’re looking worse for the wear, replace the blades.
Beat the heat this summer – Toyota of Orlando can help!

Toyota patents new twin-turbo V8 engine
This one is still kind of up in the air. After all, Toyota has largely removed the V8 engine from its lineup and replaced it with more fuel-efficient options, especially in the wake of how popular hybrid and electric cars are becoming. However, last Thursday it was revealed that they just filed a patent for a new twin-turbo V8 engine. The application details a new engine with two turbochargers (also known as superchargers) that are placed on the top of the engine block. This could mean that Toyota is planning a “hot v” engine, one that has very little lag and is actually more efficient for it. It’s also going to be more compact, which means it can fit in more passenger cars. We’ll keep you posted!
New Toyota hydrogen engine in the works
Toyota’s latest endeavor in the world of green cars is a new internal combustion engine that actually uses hydrogen as fuel. This results in a car that feels and sounds like a traditional gasoline-powered car but one that emits far fewer emissions into the air and is significantly more efficient. Toyota has placed this innovative engine in a Toyota Corolla Hatchback and will be entering said vehicle into the 2021 Super Taikyu 24 Hour Endurance Series from May 21 to 23, 2021 to see how it fares when it comes to the track.
Is an electric Toyota Land Cruiser coming?
The Orlando Toyota Land Cruiser will officially be retired after this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s fading from existence – after all, it’s an icon of the brand. It’s going to be available in other parts of the world and rumor has it that there’s a chance it could be all-electric in the coming years. Toyota recently entered into a partnership with BHP, an Australian mining company, and retrofitted a Toyota Land Cruiser with a battery-electric powertrain to see how it fared and whether or not it should be pushed into the consumer market and so far, so good.
New Toyota electrified SUVs to be produced in Indiana
We mentioned earlier this month that two new Toyota electrified models were headed our way in the upcoming year – two new SUVs, to be exact. However, we weren’t given any specifics on what TYPE of vehicles they would be (hybrids, plug-ins, all-electric, etc.). More news has been tacked onto this initial story; Toyota announced that it’s investing $803 million into the Indiana plant and adding 1,400 new jobs in order to produce the aforementioned SUVs right here in the states.
That’s the roundup for this week – if you have questions or want to schedule a test drive for ANY of our new or used cars, call us! We’re open seven days a week until 10pm at (407) 298-4500.
What is a twin-turbo engine?
Earlier this week in our news roundup we touched on the fact that Toyota had recently filed a patent for a new twin-turbo V8 engine. No one knows exactly which car or truck it’ll go into or if it will ever even come to fruition, but excitement is high among drivers who can appreciate this type of power in their ride. We’ve discussed turbocharged engines before and what they can lend to the driving experience, but today we’re delving into twin-turbo engines and how they can affect your drive time just in case this new patent ever makes its way into the lineup. Check it out.

What is a twin-turbo?
If you recall, a turbocharged engine is an engine that uses turbine power and forced induction to push extra compressed air into the engine’s combustion chamber. Why? Because this extra air means that extra fuel has to be pushed in as well (to maintain the fuel/air ratio), and you get a boost in power. The extra fuel combusts at a faster rate than a normal engine, so you can put the pedal to the metal. You’ll find this type of engine available in the iconic Orlando Toyota Supra.
The most common twin-turbo configurations
A twin-turbo, on the other hand, is when you actually have TWO turbochargers pushing extra compressed air into the combustion chamber. The turbochargers can be different sizes and can be laid out in different configurations. Here are the three types of setups you’ll typically see:
- Parallel: This is when there are two turbochargers of the same size are situated parallel to one another and each turbocharger receives half of the extra exhaust gases. This layout is best suited to V6 and V8 engines because each turbocharger can be assigned to one cylinder bank and reduce the amount of exhaust piping needed. Parallel twin-turbo engines reduce lag, which can be an issue in turbocharged cars, by using two smaller turbo chargers instead of one large one.
- Sequential: Sequential twin-turbo engines utilize one turbocharger for lower speeds and one turbocharger (or sometimes both) for higher speeds. This setup is supposed to offset the issue where turbochargers are unable to provide a boost of power when RPMs are low. Typically, a smaller turbocharger is used for a boost at low speeds and a larger turbocharger is used for a boost at higher speeds.
- Series: This type of twin-turbo setup is when the turbochargers are set up in a series (go figure). The output from the first one is then further compressed by the second one. This leads to much higher pressure and boost than you’d normally get.
We have no idea which setup (if any of them) the new Toyota V8 engine will utilize; rumor has it that right now, it will be a “hot v” configuration where the turbochargers are actually mounted in between cylinder heads and the flow of fresh charge and exhaust gases is reversed. We’ll have to wait and see what’s unveiled in the coming months.
If you have questions about turbochargers, twin-turbo setups, or just engines in general, call us! Toyota of Orlando is open seven days a week at (407) 298-4500 and we’re located just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall.
Are you thinking about heading to the beach this weekend to get your share of salt air? Things are heating up in Central Florida and it’s the perfect time to hit the sand. However, driving on the beach – especially if you drive along the shore, as you can in New Smyrna and Daytona Beach – can do a number on your car if you don’t take the proper steps before and after. Toyota of Orlando’s car care techs gave us a list of things you should do before and after you hit the beach to best protect your ride. Surf’s up!

What to do before driving on the beach
- Before you head to the beach, it’s best to prep your car with a good detailing. Not only will it look better for it, it’ll also help protect your ride from the elements. Wash and wax your car, applying a solid coat of quality wax to the exterior. This will help ward off the sun’s harmful UV rays and also put a barrier between your car’s paint and the salt air. Remember, salt combined with moisture can cause oxidization and subsequently, rust.
- Air down your tires a bit once you get close. This gives them more surface area and will make it easier for you to drive on the soft sand without sinking into it and getting stuck. It’s also a good idea to throw some cardboard in the trunk if you have it, as well as a small shovel in case you do get stuck.
- Bring a jug of water to rinse feet. Sand can be pretty abrasive to your car’s interior, especially if you have SofTex or leather seats. Make sure everyone has clean feet before you head home!
- Throw up your sunshade when you park. There’s rarely shade on the beach and leaving your car to bake in the sun all day is bad for the interior. A sunshade in the windshield will help prevent fading and cracking of your interior and also keep things cooler for when it’s time to leave.
What to do after driving on the beach
- Air your tires back up. Driving on the pavement with underinflated tires will cut your fuel efficiency and also wear your tires out faster.
- Rinse your car off. Remember, salt + moisture (a.k.a. saltwater) can do real damage to your car over time. Be sure to wash your car thoroughly to remove any traces of salt, and don’t forget to get under the car, rinsing the wheels, chassis, etc. to ensure everything is salt-free and sand-free. And you should always rinse before you wash with soap and a sponge – if you wash while there’s still sand on the car, it can cause swirls and scratches in the paint.
- Vacuum out the interior. As noted, sand is abrasive and can ruin your interior (plus, the novelty of it wears off once you’ve left the beach). Wipe your seats and vacuum out the interior so everything is back to normal before you hit the road again.
Need car detailing supplies to rinse the salt and sand off after driving on the beach? Call us – Toyota of Orlando’s parts store is open seven days a week at (407) 298-4500 and we’re conveniently located just off I-4 near the Millenia Mall at 3575 Vineland Road.

Toyota develops method to stop catalytic converter theft
Did you know that as a Prius owner, you have a higher chance of having your catalytic converter stolen right off of your car? Weird but true. Thefts of this car part have been on the rise over the past few years because hybrid car catalytic converters have more precious metals (palladium, rhodium, and platinum, to be exact) inside of them than other vehicles. This makes them more valuable to steal, dismantle, and sell. However, Toyota is taking steps to stop the theft – they’ve created a way to covertly mark the catalytic converters so they can be tracked after they’re stolen. The markers will be police-approved and 50,000 of them will roll out initially; all owners have to do is contact their local dealership to have one fitted on their car.
New 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser spotted
New spy photos of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser – without camo on – have been leaked, and things are looking good. We can’t show it here (sorry, but we’ll be sure to let you know when the OFFICIAL photos drop), but it’s looking like this new Toyota SUV is sleeker than ever for its big debut. It’s reminiscent of a Lexus LX with lean lines, sleek curves, and a powerful presence if that gives you any idea (or you can just Google it). Remember, it’s likely that it won’t be available in North America so the only way to get your hands on one is if you live overseas.
Toyota predicts 70% of sales to be electric by 2030
Big news for green drivers – Toyota is predicting that by 2030, 70% of all of their sales will be electrified with a majority of that number being hybrids. While gasoline models will still be available, they’re hoping to make their way toward carbon neutrality by the end of this decade and electric cars, hydrogen cars, and hybrid cars are the way to get there. We’re excited to see which new Toyotas make their way into the lineup to help achieve this goal (and don’t forget, you can test drive any and all of our eco-friendly new Toyotas today at Toyota of Orlando).
Toyota pairs with ENEOS for Woven City
We’ve already filled you in Toyota’s Woven City – the city of the future being built over in Japan. However, there’s more news on that front. Toyota has officially partnered with ENEOS, a Japanese petroleum company, to build a hydrogen fuel system that will power the city as cleanly as possible. ENEOS is well-versed in this realm – it currently runs 45 hydrogen fueling stations throughout Japan to support hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Toyota Mirai. ENEOS plans to install a hydrogen refueling station near the city and produce green hydrogen to further power the city itself.
Have questions or want to see our new Toyotas in person? Call us! Toyota of Orlando is open seven days a week at (407) 298-4500. You can also stop by and see us at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall.
Seven signs you shouldn’t buy this used car
If you’re shopping for a used car, you know that it can seem a little bit intimidating. It’s not like a new car, where you know exactly where it’s been before you bring it home. Used cars can be a great investment, but there’s always risk involved if you don’t do your due diligence in ensuring it’s a quality vehicle. We’ve given you tips for Orlando used car shopping before and today we’re here to share a few more – check out these seven surefire signs you shouldn’t sign the dotted line on a used vehicle.

Look for these signs when shopping Orlando used cars
Sign #1: It smells like cigarette smoke. Unless you like, enjoy that smell. If you get into a car and even smell a faint scent of cigarette smoke, forget it. This smell is notoriously difficult to get rid of and it’s likely that the seller had the used car cleaned before they showed it to you, so the scent will come back even stronger over time. No amount of air freshener can cover it up permanently so think twice before buying.
Sign #2: No maintenance or repair records. If an owner can’t seem to produce any maintenance or repair records or offer any evidence that the car has been cared for regularly, proceed with caution. Sure, some drivers don’t keep all that stuff but it can also be a sign that the car hasn’t been on a car care routine, which can shorten its lifespan and cause you problems down the road.
Sign #3: Mechanical bandaids. If you spot evidence of mechanical “bandaids” – i.e. temporary and cheap fixes to bigger problems, reconsider purchasing this Orlando used car. You don’t want to have to shell out big bucks down the road to put a permanent fix in place.
Sign #4: Dirty oil. Check the oil of the car you’re considering buying. If it’s black, dark brown, or has flecks of dirt in it, strongly consider if this is the right ride. Dirty oil means the car hasn’t been cared for and likely hasn’t been getting routine oil changes over its lifetime, which can lead to expensive issues down the road.
Sign #5: Dirty or nonexistent coolant. You should also check the coolant reservoir while you’re under the hood of the Orlando used car you’re considering. If the coolant is gone or it’s got debris in it, your cooling system could have an issue in the near future because it obviously hasn’t been maintenanced.
Sign #6: Signs of neglect. If there are obvious signs of neglect in the used car, be sure to thoroughly examine it and ask lots of questions before you buy. Things like stains and rips in the interior, scratches and dents on the exterior, bad smells, etc. can all indicate that the car hasn’t been well-cared for and might be problematic in the future.
Sign #7: Accident damage. Accident damage is always a giveaway. If the car has been in an accident its value is automatically less and it may have problems from the accident that you’ll have to deal with in the future, so be sure to ask about it and get full details.

Toyota Prius to join Nightshade Edition lineup
Things are getting dark when it comes to the Toyota Prius, and in the best way. A new teaser video from Toyota has revealed that the iconic Toyota hybrid will soon be joining the Nightshade Edition lineup, bringing an edgy new look to the already sleek and sporty hatchback. Toyota of Orlando has details!
An all-new Nightshade Edition is coming
We aren’t precisely sure what the new Nightshade Edition of the Orlando Toyota Prius will offer, but we can tell from the teaser video that it’s giving off some serious edge. Unique paint colors and blacked-out badging is a definite on this new hybrid, and we’re sure that small tweaks will be made everywhere else to make it stand out from the everyday lineup. We’ll keep you posted as details roll in so you can get your hands on one when they arrive.
Why drive the Toyota Prius?
A sleek new look isn’t the only reason to get your hands on an Orlando Toyota Prius, though – this hybrid car has major perks both inside the cabin and under the hood. Here are some of the reasons we think you should put it in your driveway today.
- It’s fuel-efficient. The 2021 Toyota Prius gets 54 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. And not only does this mean you save a ton of money on gas, it also means that your car uses less fuel and in turn, fewer natural resources. So you’re actually doing Mother Earth a solid.
- It’s eco-friendly. This green car puts out way fewer emissions than a gasoline-powered car which means it helps cut down on smog. Just another way you’re doing the planet a solid.
- The cabin is teched out. You’ll get cool features like AppleCar Play and an 11.6″ touchscreen interface, Amazon Alexa, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth wireless streaming, color Head-Up Display, Qi wireless charging, and more. You’ll basically have everything you need for connectivity, entertainment, and safety at your fingertips.
- Speaking of safety, this Orlando Toyota is decked out with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an integrated backup camera, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and intelligent clearance sonar with intelligent parking assist. It’s never been easier to have peace of mind when you’re behind the wheel.
