Does it make you nervous when you see the check engine light come on? Do you feel a sense of dread if you need to get a scratch in your car’s paint fixed? You’re not the only one – plenty of drivers get nervous when it’s time to pay a visit to their auto repair technician. However, here at Toyota of Orlando, it’s our goal to make it as pleasant and stress-free as possible for you to get your car back into like-new condition and get back out on the road. That’s why we came up with a list of questions to ask your auto repair tech to feel more comfortable with the process. Check it out!

Orlando auto body shop

What should you ask your auto repair mechanic?

1. Do you tow?

You should ask the auto repair shop you’ve chosen if they can tow your car if necessary. It could save you time and money and you’ll know your Orlando Toyota is being transported by someone you trust.

2. What kinds of warranties do you offer?

Asking about warranties is key when you’re seeking out any type of auto repair. For example, at our Toyota of Orlando Collision Center, we offer lifetime warranties on workmanship and paint services. You should ask about warranties for both labor and parts and be sure to take advantage of them if they’re available for added peace of mind.

3. Do you utilize used parts?

Always ask what the policy is when it comes to car parts. Used parts can be cheaper, but they can also be unreliable, void existing warranties on your car, and be problematic when it comes to performance. At Toyota of Orlando, we only use Toyota parts on your car to keep your Toyota a Toyota. That way, you know the parts are both reliable and compatible.

4. What’s the process?

Ask what the process is for getting auto repairs started, especially if you’ve been involved in an accident and have to deal with your insurance company. That way you know what you need to bring to the table and what to expect during the process, including the timeline.

5. How long before I get my car back?

Try to get at least an estimate of when your car will be ready to pick up so you can arrange your life accordingly. This is especially important if you’re getting a rental car.

6. Will I have a written record of repairs?

Make sure you have a written record of repairs. This will be helpful if you sell the car down the road, and it’ll also help you troubleshoot if you have issues down the road.

7. Can you help me find a rental car?

If you need assistance in finding a rental car, ask. Your auto repair tech can either help you rent one (we have an office onsite at Toyota of Orlando) or point you in the right direction to make the process easier.

Have you heard of the Million Mile Tundra? This incredible truck is a 2007 Toyota Tundra owned by Victor Sheppard and believe it or not, nearly five years ago it passed one million miles on the odometer. It sounds impossible – after all, cars with over 100k miles are usually considered to be “high mileage”. However, this Toyota just kept on trucking right past one million and given the opportunity, would likely still be out on the road today. Instead, it’s been officially retired and after an extensive tour of company facilities, it’s being stripped down to see just what’s going on under the hood. Toyota of Orlando has the details!

Toyota trucks

What is the Million Mile Tundra?

The Million Mile Tundra was put through its paces during its lifetime. Sheppard used it to transport heavy loads long distances, even cross-country, so it was towing, hauling, and driving on the highway for much of its existence. That’s a lot of wear and tear on any vehicle, so you’ll understand why Toyota was so eager to get it back and see how the engine fared. Here’s what happened when they started to take this iconic Toyota truck apart piece by piece.

  • First, the team took the engine out. It’s a 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE engine and was one of the first Toyota V8 engines to be produced in America. Toyota put the engine on a dynamometer to test its abilities and see if all those miles had any negative effect on its capability to perform. To their surprise… they didn’t. The engine performed almost as well as a brand-new engine in everything from idling to pushing the redline at 5,700 rpm.
  • The engine itself was in incredible physical condition. The engine block fared exceptionally well and there was very little carbon buildup on the valve stems. There were no visible wear marks on the crankshaft journals, and you could still see cross-hatching on the cylinder walls. There was only one small blemish on a bearing but otherwise, they were all clean.
  • The engine scored 99/100 on a quality test, which is more than enough to pass.
  • The truck bed held its weight (literally) considerably well. The only dents that it sustained during its lifetime were NOT from engineering shortfalls; rather, wear and tear from towing and hauling for such a long time. The only major damage was on the wheel wells and Sheppard himself admitted that the damage ensued after he hauled a load of pallets that were too large for the bed.
  • The tailgate still worked perfectly, and there was no rust on the frame despite Sheppard driving the truck through wind, snow, and rain.
  • The frame and leaf springs were in excellent condition, which was surprising to Toyota execs because of all the heavy weight put in the bed on a regular basis.
  • The interior also fared incredibly well – parts you’d expect to wear out like the driver’s side door latch, the glovebox latch, the center console, and the seat were all still in great working condition.

Have you ever had an issue with your catalytic converter? If you’re not familiar with the part, it honestly sounds like something you’d find on a spaceship. However, it does play a critical part in your vehicle’s performance AND the world around it. Toyota of Orlando is here to explain what a catalytic converter is, why it’s important, and how to troubleshoot it.

Orlando Toyota car care

What is a catalytic converter and why does it matter?

A catalytic converter is – in essence – the part of your car that turns harmful emissions into less harmful emissions. In an internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas contains toxic gases and pollution. Your catalytic converter reduces these harmful substances into less dangerous emissions through a chemical reaction – a redox reaction, to be specific, which basically means it changes the states of the atoms. (Science.)  Obviously, this part plays a crucial role in performance to both keep you safe and also reduce harmful emissions into the air.

Here’s a little bit of history for you – catalytic converters were first introduced designed in France in the late 19th century but didn’t become commonplace on vehicles until the 1970s. In 1975 the US E.P.A. stepped up its emissions regulations and catalytic converters became a requirement on all gasoline-powered cars, as well as on vehicles like motorcycles, buses, forklifts, generators, trains, ships, and mining equipment. Why? To keep the air cleaner and freer of pollutants and toxic gases.

So what happens if this critical part stops working or gets stolen? (Yup, believe it or not, it’s a popular car part to steal because it often contains precious metals and is located on the exterior of the car, so it’s easy to grab.) Basically, your car can’t do its job of reducing harmful emissions anymore, putting you and everyone around you at risk. Not only that, it can affect your engine and over time, lead to an engine shutdown. While they usually last 10+ years, they can experience issues due to becoming clogged (like if there’s a coolant or oil leak in the engine), if they overheat because of excess unburned gas, or if they’re damaged because you ran over road debris or a curb.

How to troubleshoot this car part

How do you know if your catalytic converter is in need of repairs? Here are some surefire signs you need to visit Toyota of Orlando:

  • Your car isn’t accelerating as quickly as it usually does
  • Your exhaust smoke is darker or black
  • There’s a lot of heat coming from under your car
  • The engine seems sluggish
  • You smell sulfur or rotten eggs coming from the vehicle

If you notice any of these signs or have concerns in general about this important car part, call Toyota of Orlando! Our Toyota service techs can inspect your car from bumper to bumper and help you troubleshoot any issues or developing issues. You can reach us seven days a week at (407) 298-4500, or stop by and see us in person at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall.

If you own a sports car, you’re probably familiar with the fact that car maintenance for this type of vehicle isn’t exactly run-of-the-mill. There’s a little more to it than if you were to maintain a basic truck or sedan, and if you’re in the market for a sports car then you should be aware of this. Toyota of Orlando is here to explain just how and why sports car maintenance differs from other vehicle care (and don’t forget, you can schedule both with us today!). Here are three things you should know about this type of auto service.

Orlando Toyota Supra

How is maintaining a sports car different than maintaining a basic vehicle?

#1: Sports car maintenance can cost more because the parts are unique. As we mentioned, these cars aren’t run-of-the-mill in any sense of the word. Their parts are often designed for that particular car only (versus being mass-produced because they can be used in various models of the make). This means the car parts can cost more than those of a typical sedan or SUV, and this can up the cost of car care overall.

#2: Sports car maintenance can also cost more because these cars are supposed to be high-performance. If you drive a more everyday car – like the Orlando Toyota Camry, for example – it’s a great ride, but it’s not especially fast or track-worthy. Sports cars, on the other hand, are meant to make sharp maneuvers, travel at high speeds, and even be used on the track for racing. This means a lot more stress on the vehicle as well as more wear and tear on the parts. Overall, this can translate to more frequent maintenance on the vehicle just to keep it in running order. This is especially true if you find yourself on the track at regular intervals – you’ll probably need to visit our Toyota of Orlando service center more frequently.

#3: Let’s not forget about detailing, either. TBH, you probably paid a fair amount of money for your sports can and because of that, you want to keep it in the best shape possible both to show off how awesome it is but also to keep its resale value high in case you want to trade it in down the road. That means you either schedule car detailing more frequently OR you spend more money on detailing supplies so you can DIY your detailing at home. Either way, it’s more money out of your pocket.

Get all of your car maintenance (and sports car) needs filled at Toyota of Orlando today

Whether you need to schedule maintenance for your sports car, get detailing supplies, or want to check out the Orlando Toyota Supra (THE sports car, in our opinion) in person, you’re in good hands with Toyota of Orlando. Call us today at (407) 298-4500 or stop by! We’re open seven days a week at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall. You can also schedule your service online for convenience, and don’t forget to ask about our service specials and service financing.

When you finally take the plunge and put a down payment on a vehicle, you want it to last a long time. This is especially true if you buy the car instead of leasing it; when you buy it, it’s yours until the wheels fall off (or until you sell it down the road, in which case you want the resale value to remain high). But just how long will a new Toyota last, and what steps can you take as the owner to ensure it has a long and fruitful life? Check out these top tips from our Orlando auto service experts on how to keep your new Toyota in the best shape possible for as long as you can.

New Toyotas offer major longevity

If you bought a new Toyota, congrats – you’ve officially become the owner of a vehicle that’s renowned throughout the automotive world for its long and reliable lifespan. Here’s a quick fact – 80% of all Toyotas bought in the past 20 years are still out on the road. This is especially true of famed SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota FJ Cruiser, both cult classics that drivers will restore and drive for decades. And many new Toyotas are perfectly capable of going more than 300,000 miles before they need any major part replacements, which means less money out of your pocket.

However, there are always things you can do to ensure that your car has a long life regardless of whether or not you bought a new Toyota. Check out these quick tips from our Orlando Toyota service techs.

Tip #1: Buy quality and look at it as an investment.

Look at your car as an investment – after all, you want it to last many miles and years. This means you should pick something that’s quality over something that’s just a good deal. Buying a new car means you’ll get even more longevity out of it, but plenty of used cars offer reliability and have the capability to get to high mileage without a problem. We highly recommend doing your research, looking at reviews, and talking to other drivers before you settle on a make and model (although we can tell you right now, a new Toyota is a VERY solid bet).

Tip #2: Remember that less is more.

Less is more when it comes to car longevity in terms of parts. The less you swap out parts and install new ones (especially if you’re using aftermarket parts), the fewer problems you’re likely to have in the future. Also, cars with fewer, more sophisticated parts tend to be cheaper to maintain, repair, and keep in excellent condition, like EVs (electric vehicles). This is another instance where buying a new car works in your favor.

Tip #3: Consider advanced safety technology.

If you can find a new Toyota that you like with advanced safety technology, you’re helping to increase your car’s lifespan. This safety tech will do an awesome job protecting you and your passengers, but it’ll also help reduce your chances of getting into an accident and damaging your vehicle, which can reduce its lifespan and result in expensive repair bills… not to mention, lower its resale value. The more safety tech on board, the better.

Tip #4: Pay attention to what your Toyota is telling you.

It’s tempting to ignore those pesky dashboard lights, but don’t do it. They light up for a reason – to warn you that there’s an issue that you need to address. The sooner you address it, the cheaper and less stressful it’ll be.

If you drive a new Toyota, you probably are at least familiar with the Smart Key System. This ingenious system makes locking, unlocking, and starting your car easier than ever before. However, what do you do if your Smart Key stops working? Toyota of Orlando’s auto service and parts center is here with advice.

Smart Key System

What is a Smart Key?

As noted, the Smart Key System is an extremely convenient feature found in many of our new Toyota cars here at Toyota of Orlando. It utilizes a key fob, touch sensors, and a push button start to add an element of efficiency to your drive time that you just don’t get with a hard mechanical key. Basically, if you have your Smart Key on your person – even if it’s in your pocket or purse – you can simply touch the sensor on your door handle to lock or unlock your vehicle. And once you’re in the car, as long as the key is still on your person you can just press the Push Button Start, and voila – off you go.

There is, however, one small issue – what if your Smart Key stops working? Smart Keys are battery-operated, much like any other key fob that you’d use to lock and unlock your vehicle. They have a hard mechanical key inside of them that you can pull out and use to unlock your door to access the interior of your car. The problem arises, however, when you have a vehicle that uses the Push Button Start system to get the engine up and running. You don’t have a physical ignition where you can put a hard mechanical key in, twist it, and get things going. So what do you do?

The good news is that as long as you have the Smart Key in your possession – even if it’s dead or the battery is low – you should be able to still start your new Toyota. If you hold the key next to the Push Button Start and press the button, your car engine should fire up without a problem. If it doesn’t, then it’s very likely that your problem lies with your actual car battery, not your car key battery. Remember, if the car battery is dead then you may not be able to use your power door locks.

Replace your missing Smart Key at Toyota of Orlando

What if you lose your new Toyota’s Smart Key? If your key is missing, you’re going nowhere fast. However, we can replace it for you here at Toyota of Orlando. You’ll need to bring in a photo I.D. and proof of ownership of the car, as well as your VIN number. This will allow our Orlando Toyota specialists to access your Smart Key code number and then we can take steps to get you a new key and reprogram your new Toyota so that the new key works (and the old one doesn’t, in case it was stolen).

Have questions or need to replace your Smart Key? Call us! Toyota of Orlando is open seven days a week at (407) 298-0001.

Tacoma drivers, rejoice – Toyota is officially releasing an all-new TRD lift kit for this iconic truck! This dealer-installed option will give the Orlando Toyota Tacoma a serious boost and was designed to be perfectly compatible with the truck, and we’ve got all the details about what it’ll have to offer. Read on!

Orlando Toyota truck parts

What does this new TRD lift kit have to offer?

This all-new Toyota TRD lift kit is the first of its kind – no Toyota lift kit exists for the Tacoma, at least until now. Here are the details:

  • It’s an official Toyota TRD suspension lift kit – up until now, all that was available were aftermarket kits that worked but weren’t official Toyota products (so you don’t get that same sense of reliability AND they could possibly void warranties that you have on your truck).
  • This special lift kit will offer 2″ of lift in the front and 1″ of lift in the rear; this provides the Orlando Toyota Tacoma with enhanced ground clearance (+1.7″) and better approach (+3.1 to 32 degrees), departure (+0.5 to 24 degrees), and breakover (+1.6 to 23 degrees) angles for tackling tough terrain.
  • The kit is composed of Bilstein monotube shocks with digressive valving. Each shock is further fitted with red TRD dust boots and graphics that boast “Tuned by TRD”.
  • As noted, the front shocks boost things by 2″ because of an adjusted coil spring position on the shock tube and have extended rebound stroke.
  • The rear shocks have a larger shock body than the standard shock; this means they have a higher oil volume to keep things cool and improve damping response when you’re traveling rocky roads. These larger shocks can also hold larger pistons and piston rods for enhanced strength and include cast-iron spacers.
  • This TRD lift kit has been tested by TRD engineers and is the ONLY existing lift kit that is compatible with the Toyota Safety Sense system technology integrated into the Toyota Tacoma.

The kit is dealer-installed and comes with all the necessary hardware for installation, so you can definitely get info and options at Toyota of Orlando. It also comes with a special new grille with TOYOTA lettering on the front (as opposed to the Toyota badge) and a new Toyota Safety System millimeter-wave sensor to ensure the TSS works with the lift kit. Pricing for the kit is $1,350 (not including labor) and this lift kit is available for all Toyota Tacoma V6 4×4 models after the model year 2020. Best news? It comes with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on parts if installed at time of sale OR a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty after the fact.

Have you ever pulled into the gas station, parked at the pump, and noticed the “Less than 10% Ethanol stickers” on it? If you’re anything like most drivers, you probably didn’t think twice about it and may not even know what that means. Toyota of Orlando is here to give you a mini (and pain-free) chemistry lesson on what ethanol is, why it’s used as a fuel additive, and what it can mean for your car’s performance.

car fueling tips

What is ethanol?

Ethanol is actually found in almost every single grade of gasoline available today, although the amount of ethanol found in your fuel can vary. Here are a few quick facts on ethanol and where it comes from:

  • This substance actually is created by a natural process – you get ethanol when you ferment yeast with sugars. It can be manufactured from a wide variety of crops, too – in North America, it’s commonly created from corn whereas, in Brazil, they prefer to produce it using sugarcane since that’s a plentiful crop in that region of the world.
  • Ethanol can be found in lots of places besides gasoline – it’s used in alcoholic beverages, for one, and is also sometimes used as a disinfectant substance in the medical field. It’s actually distilled on a worldwide basis for a variety of purposes.

It’s also a viable fuel source and is commonly used as an additive in gasoline. But why?

The U.S. started adding this substance to fuel back in the early 2000s. Ethanol is usually added to gasoline to help preserve fossil fuels; it stretches the gas a bit further, to put it as simply as possible. Additionally, it also helps to cut down on emissions. Typically you’ll find that most gasoline here in the U.S. is about 10% ethanol or less (you can look at the stickers on the pump to determine just how much is in the fuel that you’re using in your Orlando Toyota).

What benefits come from adding this substance to fuel?

Putting this substance in fuel helps to reduce the carbon emissions coming out of your Orlando Toyota’s tailpipe, but let us be clear – this only works if the percentage of ethanol in the fuel is low. If you were to utilize a mixture that was more ethanol than gasoline (like 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline), you’d actually be putting the planet in a worse submission. Burning ethanol at levels like that creates more smog than if you were to just stick to pure gasoline.

However, as great as this all sounds, there is a caveat. Ethanol is hygroscopic; this means it pulls in moisture and absorbs it from the surrounding air. Having excess moisture in your gas tank is never a good thing, especially in older cars where it could cause rust and performance problems. It shouldn’t be an issue in a newer Orlando Toyota; these cars are built to guard against this issue (and ethanol levels are typically low enough to not cause issues). However, if you drive a classic, consider finding an ethanol-free fuel to fill up the tank.

If you have questions about the type of fuel you should be using in your ride, give the Toyota of Orlando auto service center a call today. You can reach us seven days a week at (407) 298-4500 or stop by and see us at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 across from the Millenia Mall.

Toyota is renowned on a global basis for its vehicles. Not only do they have a wide array of options spanning everything from compact sports cars to spacious and safe SUVs, but they also are recognized as a brand that’s durable, reliable, and exceptional in terms of performance. They’re also responsible for introducing some of the most iconic cars to the market, and today our Orlando Toyota dealership is taking a closer look at four of them.

The four most iconic new Toyotas out there

Toyota Supra

Who doesn’t know the Toyota Supra? This iconic sports car is back for a second round but the first iteration of it is the one that gained major notoriety in the automotive world. It’s got five generations under its belt and the fourth – the one that spanned 1993 – 2002 – is arguably the most notorious. It’s reliable, performance-driven, and relatively inexpensive given its capabilities. Plus, it was featured in The Fast and the Furious – need we say more?

Orlando Toyota sports car

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser has been around for a lot longer than you night realize – the first model was brought to market in the 40s as a wartime solution in Japan. It was initially meant for tackling tough terrain and was pretty bare-bones inside, but over the decades has evolved into a luxurious AND off-road-ready SUV. Unfortunately, it’s going to be retired after the 2021 model year, but it’ll always be remembered for the icon it is.

Toyota SUV

Toyota Prius

Hybrids are pretty common nowadays, but this wasn’t always the case… at least until the introduction of the Orlando Toyota Prius. This new Toyota hybrid was introduced to the world in the early 2000s, kicking off the green car revolution. Since then, hybrids have become more and more commonplace out on the road and Toyota has introduced multiple new hybrid models besides the iconic Toyota Prius.

Toyota’s Four Most Iconic Cars

Toyota Mirai

Toyota is an ever-evolving brand, and it definitely takes producing green cars seriously. (See above.) The Toyota Mirai is their foray into fuel cell vehicles. This idea isn’t uncommon, but Toyota is one of the only brands that were actually able to put all of the research into fruition. This revolutionary ride has been around since 2014 and has already been redesigned once to make it even more sleek and stylish. The technology is also being put to use in the industrial world to replace diesel engines.

fuel cell vehicle

Those aren’t the only iconic Toyotas out there. The Toyota Tacoma is a global favorite for its rugged capabilities. The Toyota RAV4 is revered for its versatility and efficiency, and the Toyota Camry is a bestseller because of its classic style and dependability. Not to mention, the entire brand is famous for its safety technology AND high resale value.
