Have you been looking for a new or used car lately and coming up short? Unfortunately, the world we live in today is full of all sorts of shortages. Labor shortages, goods shortages, and now vehicle shortages have hit everyone – we’re all being affected, regardless of which make or model you’re looking for. Toyota of Orlando is here to explain why the vehicle shortages are happening and what you can do about it to still find the best possible ride for your day-to-day drive time.

What caused the vehicle shortage?

First, let’s take a quick look at why vehicle shortages are happening in the first place. We’ve discussed the car chip shortages and how those sprang out of COVID; the pandemic also resulted in a gross underestimate of how many cars automakers would actually be able to sell, which led to high demand and low supply. Both of these issues led to a vehicle shortage that spans all makes and models across the globe.

However, we’ve got two pieces of good news for you here at Toyota of Orlando:

  1. Your existing vehicle is in high demand, which means you’ll get the best possible offer for it if you decide to trade it in or sell it. People and dealerships alike need used cars for their lots, so the value of your vehicle is sky-high right now.
  2. It’s not that difficult to find a new car in spite of the vehicle shortage if you shop at Toyota of Orlando. We’ve got trucks full of new Toyotas arriving every single day, multiple times a day. And even if you can’t find what you want on our lot, you can view all of our in-stock AND in-transit inventory on our website so you can see what’s headed our way. You can even preorder your new Toyota before it arrives so you can guarantee it’s yours when it gets here.

And even better news, if you still can’t find exactly what you want in our in-stock or in-transit inventory, we can HELP you find it and get it to Toyota of Orlando for you to drive home.

So while yes, there is a vehicle shortage and yes, this vehicle shortage might be here for the foreseeable future, there’s still good news and you’ve got our Orlando Toyota dealership in your corner to help you find the perfect new car. Why not see how much your current car is worth? We can make you a cash offer on the spot, even if you decide you don’t want to buy your next car from us. You can also come in to sit with one of our sales specialists if you’re looking for something specific that you can’t find in our inventory and let them help you come up with a solution.

Orlando Toyota SUVs

We’re big fans of the Toyota Highlander here at Toyota of Orlando, and we’re not the only ones. This spacious and stylish SUV is a fan favorite across the board for its roomy interior, its stylish and sleek design, and its performance, which is based on both safety and efficiency (while still making it fun to drive). The Toyota Highlander has been the No. 1 retail midsize SUV for six years running. However, 2023 is bringing a big upgrade to this fan favorite – we’ve got the details.

Get ready for improved performance in the 2023 Toyota Highlander

The big news? In 2023, the Orlando Toyota Highlander will officially have a turbocharged engine sitting under the hood. This is unprecedented for this particular SUV; it always had a V6 or 4-cylinder engine under the hood to provide drivers with reliable and efficient performance, but we never thought we’d see the words “Highlander” and “turbocharged” in the same sentence. Here’s the breakdown.

  • This acclaimed new engine is a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will allow for 256 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque.
  • This is 17% more torque than the previous 3.5L V6 found in many models of the Orlando Toyota Highlander.
  • However, don’t think that just because you’ve got more torque on your side that your fuel efficiency is going to suffer. It’s actually going to stay the same – 24 mpg combined – as it was when a V6 engine was under the hood.
  • Plus, you’ll get more feel-good vibes driving this new and improved Toyota SUV. It’s actually more eco-friendly than previous iterations, with more than a 50% reduction in NOx and NMOG emissions AND an improvement in CO2 emissions.
  • The turbocharged engine gives you the get-up-and-go to tow 5,000 lbs and also will include vehicle stability control and trailer sway control to making towing and hauling more effortless than ever.

What else is new on the 2023 Toyota Highlander?

Not only will drivers still be able to get the Premium JBL audio system with 11 speakers, but they’ll also be able to upgrade their driving experience with the option of a 12.3″ multi-information display screen. Additionally, a 12.3″ full digital instrument cluster screen replaces the prior 7″ TFT, and drivers will be able to choose from themes like smart, casual, sporty, and tough.

Not only that, several trims will offer power-folding exterior mirrors and an improved Qi wireless charging system that’s conveniently located on the instrument panel shelf. Plus, a new hands-free power liftgate will be available, as well as a new Cypress exterior paint color and both Harvest Beige and Glazed Caramel interiors with black accent colors.

Plus, the special Bronze Edition will be back for the 2023 model year, giving you an edgy new model with unique aesthetics to put in the driveway.

We can’t wait for the new and improved 2023 Toyota HIghlander to arrive at Toyota of Orlando! car emergency

Have you ever been driving down the road and heard an odd noise? Vague question, we know – so many different things can cause noises that are out of the ordinary for your vehicle. However, if something is stuck underneath your car, you’ll often hear it before you see it. Toyota of Orlando is here with tips on what to do in this car emergency and how to handle the aftermath.

Toyota of Orlando’s tips on this roadside car emergency

If you’ve ever gotten something stuck under your car, you know that it can happen in a multitude of ways. Balls and other toys can find their way under your car, you can run over things on the road, and things can actually become detached from the underside of your car and start to drag. Some of the more common things we see stuck under cars include:

  • Plastic bags and trash from the road
  • Road debris from an accident or construction
  • Sports balls and other toys
  • Skid plates that have become loosened and are now dragging
  • Exhausted heat shields that literally can’t hang anymore
  • Plastic shields designed for aerodynamics that come loose and hang down to drag on the road

Whatever it is, it can cause an awful (and stressful) noise, and believe it or not, it can do damage to the underside of your vehicle, leaving you with repairs on your plate. Our Orlando auto service experts are here with tips on how to handle this car emergency step by step.

What to do if something gets stuck under your car

#1: Pull over and turn your car off. The first step to take in this car emergency is to pull over as quickly as you can. Find a safe place to park that’s either in a parking lot or, if you’re on the highway, far away from traffic. You’ll want to park on a flat spot that’s free or sand or mud, and turn your hazard lights on so other cars can see you. Turn your car off and hop out, making sure to be mindful of the cars passing you.

#2: Check underneath to see what’s stuck there. Your next step should be to see if you can figure out what’s stuck under your car. Don’t crawl under your car (especially if you’re on the side of the road), but look under there to see if you can spot the issue. It’s a good idea to always have some sort of flashlight in your car in case you run into this car emergency at night.

#3: Decide whether or not you can safely remove it. Next, you should figure out whether or not you can actually remove what’s stuck under your car. Remember, pulling something out could actually do more harm than good, so this is going to be a case-by-case situation. If you have a ball stuck under your car, deflate it before you try to pull it out. If whatever is stuck underneath doesn’t come out with ease, it could damage your car more if you try to use brute force. This is also true for parts that have come loose and are dangling down. In these scenarios, it’s best to call for help.

#4: Bring your Orlando Toyota to our service center. It’s always worth having our Orlando Toyota service techs take a peek under your car to make sure no damage was done to anything. This is especially true if you hear any strange noises, or smell or hear anything out of the ordinary.

Toyota Cabin Awareness tech

Did you know that in 2021, 23 children died from heat stroke after being left in hot cars? Here in Central Florida, this concern is legitimate with the intense heat we see every single summer. The inside of a car can reach upwards of 125 degrees F in just minutes, and according to the non-profit Kids and Cars, one in four children that die in a hot car made their way into the vehicle without their parents or guardians realizing.

Toyota’s new Cabin Awareness tech uses 4D imaging to save lives

Toyota is always at the forefront of safety technology and research, and this particular concern is no exception. They’ve launched all-new Connected Cabin Awareness tech to detect both people and pets inside the car, and our Orlando Toyota dealership is here to explain this innovative safety feature and how it can benefit you as a driver.

Cabin Awareness exists in a lot of new Toyotas right now; it’ll remind anyone sitting in a seat to put their seatbelt on once the car is in operation, and it’ll also flash a reminder to the driver to check the backseat as soon as the vehicle is turned off. However, this new safety feature is next-level. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Cabin Awareness uses millimeter-wave high-resolution 4D imaging radar to detect people and pets inside the vehicle cabin.
  • The tech is mounted out of sight above a vehicle’s headliner and scans the vehicle even after the driver has exited, ensuring that if any living thing is left behind, the driver will be alerted.
  • Cabin Awareness can sense micromovements like heartbeat, respiration, and any motion of occupants and spans all three seating rows, the cargo area, and the vehicle’s footwells. It can even sense occupants if they’re under a blanket.
  • Once an occupant is sensed in the vehicle, the Toyota will alert the driver (and possibly people walking by) with a series of alerts. First, the instrument cluster lights up. Then the horn honks. Next, emergency lights flash. Finally, a warning notification and text message can be sent to the driver through the Toyota app on their phone. And if programmed correctly, Cabin Awareness can send alerts through smart home devices and to other emergency contacts, as well as Toyota Safety Connect emergency assistance, who can then contact first responders.
  • This new Toyota safety feature will debut as a patent-pending concept in a new Toyota Sienna prototype and will further be tested in the Toyota Sienna AutonoMaaS (Autonomous Mobility as a Service) shuttle at the Toyota headquarters in Michigan.
  • The inspiration for this new Toyota safety feature came from NASA, believe it or not – the microwave radar tech used in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory inspired it. (The tech was used in 2015 in Nepal to detect earthquake survivors buried in rubble.)
  • This Toyota safety feature includes the only tech on the market that can monitor an entire vehicle cabin with a single sensor.

Driving in a tornado

Did you know that there was actually a tornado in downtown Orlando two years ago? Granted, it was only an EF1, but it still did a fair amount of damage as it uprooted trees, ripped roofs off houses, and flung debris into homes and cars. While we don’t see a ton of tornados here in Central Florida – especially when compared to the Midwest – we certainly have the propensity for them with the intense summer thunderstorms and seasonal hurricanes we get here on a normal basis. So what should you do if you’re out on the road and experience driving in a tornado? Toyota of Orlando is here with tips.

Six tips for driving in a tornado

#1: Be aware. If there’s bad weather in your area, pay attention to the alerts that are sent to your smartphone and on the radio. Tornado warnings can give you a heads up that it’s in your best interest to get off the road and find a safe place to shelter until the bad weather passes. You should also watch the sky around you – carefully – for signs that a tornado is imminent, including:

  • The sky turning a dark green color
  • An uneasy, still quietness in the middle of a storm, especially if you were just driving in heavy rain or hail
  • A loud roaring noise that sounds like a train or a vacuum cleaner
  • Debris falling around you or a cloud of debris at ground-level
  • A rotating funnel extending out of a cloud

#2: Try to get off the road as quickly as possible. Pull into a parking lot and head for shelter as quickly as you can and stay there until the weather passes. Your best and safest bet is to avoid driving in a tornado altogether.

#3: If you can’t get off the road, don’t try to park under bridges or in tunnels for shelter. It may seem safer at a glance but bridges and tunnels actually create wind tunnels, enhancing the already incredibly strong winds even more and putting you in more danger than you would be out in the open. When driving in a tornado, you should never seek shelter in these places.

#4: If you see a low-lying area, head for it. If there’s any ground around your vehicle that’s lower than the level of the road, like a ditch or a ravine, you should exit your car and make a run for it. Lie down in the dip and cover your head with your hands. And try to avoid areas with trees as they’ll become instant debris.

#5: Know when to shelter in your car. If there’s nowhere to find shelter outside of your car, you should stay in it. Put your car in park (again, away from trees), put your seatbelt on, and put your head down. Try to get lower than the windows and if you have a blanket or jacket, use it to cover your head. Be sure to additionally protect your head with your hands and arms.

#6: Don’t try to outrun it. When driving in a tornado, never try to outrun it. Tornados are extremely unpredictable and fast; they can change course in an instant, disappear and reappear, and more. Your best bet is to either try to find shelter or to pull over and prepare yourself.

car care for pets

Do you like to take your four-legged friends along with you when you hit the road? You’re not the only one – According to the American Automobile Association, over 80% of dog owners drive with their pets in the car. And there are 43 million households with pets in the US, so you do the math.

However, having your dog in the backseat (because remember, they should never be in the front seat – it’s extremely dangerous) can do a number on your car’s interior, especially if you have SofTex or leather trim. Toyota of Orlando’s parts store is here with car care tips on how to protect your car’s interior from pets and keep your vehicle’s value high for the long run.

Car care tips for driving with dogs

Tip #1: Invest in a backseat hammock or seat covers. An easy solution to protecting your backseat is to invest in a hammock for it. These special piece of fabric basically hooks to the driver and front passenger seats and the backseat to create a space for your dog. Not only will it prevent them from crawling into the front seat when you’re not paying attention, but it’ll also protect your Softex or leather seats from their nails AND keep dog hair to a minimum – you can just pull it out and brush it off. And one more bonus? Most of them are waterproof in case of accidents.

Tip #2: Purchase door protectors. Your seats aren’t the only part of your Orlando Toyota’s backseat that you’ll need to protect if you have a four-legged friend back there. Believe it or not, you can also buy door protectors. Before you scoff, think about it – your dog will likely get excited and want to put its front paws up on the door so they can see better out the window, leaving scratches on the trim and plastic. These protectors prevent that from happening.

Tip #3: Buy a cover for the cargo area of your Orlando Toyota. If you put your pets in the cargo area of your car, they can also do damage back there. Buy a cargo area cover that will protect not only the floor but also the plastic sides of your cargo space to prevent unsightly scratches and other damage.

Tip #4: Consider a booster seat for them. Did you know that there are actually booster seats for dogs? And not only that, most of them allow for you to harness your dog in with a seatbelt. This is an extremely way to transport your dog – if you get into an accident, they won’t become a projectile or be ejected from the car. Additionally, keeping them in their booster seat will prevent them from ruining the sides or seats of your car with their nails.

Tip #5: Keep their nails trimmed. Another way to better protect your car’s interior from pets is to keep your dog’s nails trimmed short. The longer they are, the more they’ll scratch things up. Get your pet nail trims regularly and also, getting them groomed on the regular will help prevent so much hair from ending up in your backseat.
