What's new in Toyota news this week? New Toyota GR Supra Funny Car gets 330 hp Toyota introduced an all-new Toyota GR Supra Funny Car (a.k.a. drag racing car) to the world of NHRA this past weekend! Since 2012, their NHRA car has always been based on the ever-popular Toyota Camry, but for 2022 Toytora is putting a Supra in the ring. This new Toyota Funny Car will debut next February at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals weekend and will be piloted by J.R. Todd and Alexis DeJoria. Todd is the 2018 NHRA Champion, while DeJoria is a former U.S. Nationals winner. We can't wait to see what it has to offer - Funny Cars are typically bigger, wider, and has a longer wheelbase than production cars, so seeing the GR Supra transform into one will definitely be interesting. Is a GR Corolla headed our way? Pretty much everyone loves the all-new Toyota GR Yaris that was brought to market in Europe last year, and we were bummed to learn that it wouldn't be making its way stateside anytime soon. According to recent rumors, that's about to change. It's been suggested that an all-new GR Corolla with the same turbocharged 1.6L 3-cylinder engine as the GR Yaris will be introduced in the US, offering 295 horsepower. Another rumor surrounding the Orlando Toyota Supra has been making its way into the limelight lately - namely, that this much-loved sports car will be getting a manual gearbox in 2023. Seven custom Toyota concept vehicles were just revealed and our Orlando Toyota dealership has the breakdown on each of them. Which of these custom Toyota concepts would you drive? #1: TRD Desert Chase Tundra As if there wasn't already enough buzz about the new 2022 Toyota Tundra, Toyota upped its game and turned it into an off-road racing chase support vehicle. This new Toyota concept truck was transformed by the Toyota Motorsports Garage Team and includes a long-travel suspension system, a wide-body kit, a custom roll bar with two spare tires mounted on it, a custom-mounted off-road jack, and all of the other recovery equipment needed to rescue a fellow driver in harsh desert conditions. #2: "Tacozilla" Toyota Tacoma Camper We already talked about the " Tacozilla ", a Tacoma converted into a camper made for off-road adventures, at length. We'd buy it. They should make it. #3: 2022 Lifted and Accessorized Toyota Tundra The 2022 Toyota Tundra itself will be up for grabs next month (hint - follow us on social media for updates), but not like this. This customized Supersonic Red truck will offer a 3" lift kit among other things and will showcase a wide variety of the 100+ accessories that will be available for this redesigned truck. The two removable roof panels can be stored in the trunk of the car, and there's no "t-top" design - it's just open air above. It also has retro styling similar to the GR Supra Heritage Edition. Additionally, the new MSRP will start at $27,700. Toyota included on Fortune Magazine's Global 500 List Toyota has moved up a spot to the #9 slot on the Global 500 List put out by Fortune Magazine. And we especially love it when the rumors surround bringing back much-loved icons like some of the popular sports cars in Toyota's past - namely, the Toyota MR2. This iconic coupe was a popular ride back in the 80s - 00s era, and with good reason. It was a unique mid-engine design that offered power but also fuel economy; it was also sporty and small, making it a ton of fun to drive. Is the Toyota MR2 headed back to Toyota of Orlando? However, to our chagrin, the Toyota MR2 was retired back in 2007 and we haven't seen it since. Imagine our excitement, then, when we hear rumors that it's coming back a la Supra - redesigned, retuned, and ready to hit the road. Here are the details! Supposedly, Toyota wants to bring the Toyota MR2 back to market. If you recall, back in 2017 there was a statement made by Tetsuya Tada, chief of Toyota Gazoo Racing, about a future performance-based group of cars called the "three brothers". So far we have the Orlando Toyota 86 and Toyota Supra, so it wouldn't be out of the question to assume that the MR2 could be making its grand return. According to rumors, Toyota is looking for a partner on the project similar to how they partnered with Subaru for the 86 and BMW for the Supra. If what we're hearing is true, they want to partner with either Lotus or Porsche. The new Toyota MR2 would harness hybrid power under the hood - specifically, plug-in hybrid power. It would be mid-engine again, with a 2.8L or 3.0L V6 engine that would offer anywhere from 345 horsepower to 395 horsepower. Pricing would kick off at around $43,900, making it even more expensive than the current Toyota Supra models at Toyota of Orlando. Aesthetically, the rumors claim that this revived icon will look similar to the Toyota Alessandro Volta concept, which featured a sleek and modern sports car. However, this concept was designed back in 2004, so we don't know how much weight this one holds. Supposedly, this iconic sports car would be returning to market in 2024, which means it would already have to be in development to meet the timeline. We truly don't know what to expect from this rumor - it may be just that and disappear in a few months with nothing coming to fruition. We'll just have to wait and see! From a new US-based electric car battery plant to a die-hard Supra driver, we've got all the latest and greatest news - check it out. Man bodily protects his Supra from a hailstorm We all know that some people love their cars. Like, really love them - name them, treat them like children, would do anything. But we saw a whole new level of devotion on TikTok this weekend. A man in Sydney, Australia was featured actually COVERING HIS SUPRA with his body to protect it from hail. Apparently, he had cardboard and blankets to mostly cover the car and fend off the elements, but the hood was left unprotected so he himself acted as a human shield to try and prevent hail damage. All we can say is ouch. Toyota testing hydrogen combustion engines in race cars Toyota recently announced that they're testing hydrogen combustion technology in the engines of their race cars in an effort to hopefully start utilizing this clean tech in their commercial cars (aka what you drive every day). It wouldn't happen anytime soon, of course - the technology is still in its infancy and would need to be tested and studied thoroughly before making it a mainstream option. Additionally, the infrastructure for this type of vehicle (fueling stations, repair shops, etc.) isn't in place and would take time to develop. Regardless, it's nice to know that another alternative fuel vehicle may be available in the future. Electric car battery plants coming to US Toyota is bringing more business to the US! Over the next decade, the automaker will invest a cool $1.3 billion to build an electric car battery plant right here in the U.S. It's expected to begin production in 2025. Additionally, another $3.4 billion will be spent on employee training and equipment to ensure the plant is up and running. We don't know exactly where the plants will be built, Is a new special edition Tundra model coming? Rumor has it that not only is the 2022 Toyota Tundra completely redesigned, but it's also bringing a new special edition to the table. Most other truck makes (like Ford, RAM, and GMC) have a top-of-the-line luxury model in their truck lineup that pulls out all the stops. It's been speculated that Toyota WILL offer a luxury model at some point in the game called the "Capstone" model. Toyota hasn't confirmed anything, but here's to hoping! Toyota switching to hybrids and electric cars only in Brazil We all know that the push for cleaner energy is on, and Toyota is jumping aboard by upping their research and production of alternative fuel vehicles. They're taking it one step further in Brazil, though - in the next six years, the automaker till ONLY sell hybrid and electric vehicles in that country. The 2021 Toyota Mirai is a pretty insanely cool car. It's. hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which means it runs on hydrogen - not gasoline - and emits nothing but water vapor when it's out and about on the roads. It's extremely efficient, eco-friendly, and also teched out with the latest and greatest features for convenience, entertainment, and safety. However, it's adding one more accolade to its list - it just broke a Guinness World Record. New Toyota Mirai drives 845 miles on one fuel-up Yup, you heard us right - the new Toyota Mirai broke a Guinness World Record by traveling 845 miles on a single hydrogen fill. Our Orlando Toyota dealership has all the info! To fill the Toyota Mirai with hydrogen, it takes about five minutes. So basically, this car drove almost 1,000 miles after a five minute fuel-up. Behind the wheel were professional drivers Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger; they left the Toyota Technical Center in Gardena, California (this is where the fuel cell development group is housed). From there, they took two days to put in the 845 miles. They traveled south to San Ysidro and then up to Santa Barbara via the Pacific Coast Highway. Throw in some local driving loops and rush hour traffic on the San Diego freeway between LA and Orange County, and you've got your 845 miles. The record is legit, too - Guinness World Records monitored the whole thing very closely to ensure it happened the way it was supposed to. Michael Empiric, a Guinness employee, validated the process by putting a seal on the Toyota Mirai's tank once it had been filled. If the seal was broken at any point, that means fuel was added and the record was not validated. The seal was intact when the 845-mile marker was hit, meaning this is one for the books (literally). “The Toyota Mirai’s journey without the need to refuel showcases the power of fuel cell electric technology. This technology and the design ingenuity by the team at Toyota led to a history-making moment," said Empiric. But record-setting distance capability isn't all that the new Toyota Mirai has to offer. It's finally official - after months of teasers and close-up pictures that didn't give that much away, the 2022 Toyota Tundra has finally been unveiled in all its glory. The new 2022 Toyota Tundra takes performance in a whole new direction, enhancing both power and efficiency simultaneously. Here are some of the highlights: Two powertrain options: A twin-turbo 3.5L V6 i-Force engine that offers 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, as well as an even more powerful twin-turbo hybrid i-Force Max engine that provides 437 horsepower and an incredible 583 lb-ft of torque. Both will be paired with an automatic 10-speed transmission. The hybrid engine will offer an EV mode for city driving as well as additional horsepower and torque, so whether you need efficiency or power, you're covered. A towing capacity of up to 12,000 lbs (an increase of around 2,000 lbs from prior models) and a payload max of 1,900 lbs An all-new chassis with a fully boxed wider rear frame for better stability, towing capacity, passenger comfort, and enhanced rigidity. Additionally, the chassis is designed with high-strength steel and aluminum alike to improve performance but also bring down overall weight.
