The Toyota Tacoma is one of Toyota’s most-loved trucks (vehicles in general, really). It has an almost cult following because of its versatility, high resale value, dependability, and affordable price tag. Plus, it’s incredibly customizable, giving you the opportunity to build out whatever it is you need for your adventures on and off the pavement.
New “Tacozilla” offers endless overlanding opportunities
It’s so customizable, in fact, that Toyota is taking it to an all-new level for the 2021 SEMA show (which takes place at the end of this year, November 2-5). They’re creating what they’ve dubbed the “Tacozilla”, and our Orlando Toyota dealership is here with the details about this incredible new concept vehicle headed our way.

The “Tacozilla” is a cool new concept that integrates the love of camping and overlanding that many Toyota Tacoma drivers innately have with this capable off-road truck. Basically, it’s an off-roading camper mashup that would allow drivers to carry some of the comforts of home with them no matter how far off the beaten path they travel. We don’t have a ton of information yet – all that’s been leaked is an artist’s rendering of this innovative concept truck – but from what we’ve heard, it’ll be full-service, including elements like:
- A tubular frame above the chassis that allows for ample interior space
- A dining area and couch for inside eating in inclement weather
- A bathroom with running water and a toilet
- A double bed sleeper compartment above the bed of the truck so you don’t necessarily have to sleep under the stars (unless you want to)
- A kitchenette for cooking when the campfire taste gets old
- Durable all-terrain Cooper Discoverer tires for handling the roughest of roads
- A short rear overhang that still allows for the off-road angles you need on tricky terrain and custom fenders, as well as sleek rounded edges that blend with the bodywork of the truck
- A lifted suspension for superior handling on and off the road
- A manual transmission
- Retro Toyota-inspired graphics to break up the white paint and also call back to Toyota’s truck/camper collaborations with Chinook in the 1970s
- A rear access point for the interior
Pretty awesome, in our opinion. This unique concept will be built on a modern Toyota Tacoma TRD sport model and is being designed and brought to life at the Plano, TX plant, where Tacomas and Tundras are manufactured and assembled.
A lot of smaller details are still up in the air, like what materials will be used to construct the camper and how many people will actually be able to fit in it. It also stands to question whether or not this concept car is actually indicative of things to come down the road – is a Toyota Tacoma camper going to show up at Toyota of Orlando in the next decade? We have no idea, but we’d be here for it if it did.
