What to do when you overfill your gas tank

What to do when you overfill your gas tank

Have you ever overfilled your gas tank? It happens to the best of us. You're pumping gas, watching the numbers roll by (and maybe zoning out while you do it) and suddenly, gas is overflowing out of the tank and onto your feet. But what happens if you overfill your gas tank? Can it damage your car? What should you do if it happens? Toyota of Orlando is here with tips. What happens if you overfill your gas tank? You may think that an overfilled gas tank is no big deal. Sure, you have to go home and change your shoes (and ride with the windows open for a while to get the gasoline stench out of your car), but that's as far as your worries go, right? It's actually a little more complicated than that. An overfilled gas tank can cause serious problems with your Orlando Toyota, including: Damaged solenoids, which can prevent your car from starting A saturated charcoal canister, which can lead to issues when filling your car with gas as well as a smell of gasoline in your Orlando Toyota's cabin Purge valve failure, which can lead to poor fuel efficiency, emissions issues, and rough idling Overall, if you have an overfilled gas tank it can lead to issues with starting and accelerating your car, poor fuel efficiency, and problems with your emissions system. Further, when you spill gas on the ground you're polluting soil and water sources, as well as contributing to air pollution. And let's not forget that gas is flammable - even fumes from gasoline can ignite when exposed to a spark. So what should you do if you face this situation? What to do when you overfill your gas tank Here's the good news - if you overfill the gas tank once, you're unlikely to have issues with your vehicle. A one-time accident probably won't cause any problems. You should clean up the mess on the side of your car and the ground (and yourself), keeping in mind that gas is highly flammable. more How to avoid an overfilled gas tank However, if you continue to overfill the gas tank, you can face expensive issues down the road. Here's how our Orlando Toyota service techs recommend avoiding this situation. If you choose to lock the pump handle in and let the gas pump by itself, don't wander off. Stay next to the pump and listen for the click that indicates the tank is full and you should stop fueling. Be mindful and present when pumping, listening for that click. When you hear it, that's your notification that you should STOP pumping to avoid an overfilled gas tank. Don't try to "top off" your gas. Some drivers will continue to pump even after the click to top off the tank, but this is unnecessary and can lead to gas spillage as the tank overflows. Topping off your tank won't save you money on fuel (despite the common misconception). You can actually cost yourself money by damaging your car. Toyota of Orlando has answers to all of your fuel questions Have more questions about how to care for your car when it comes to fueling? We have answers. where to find the VIN number

Where to find the VIN number on your Toyota

Have you ever heard the term VIN when talking about cars? This acronym stands for "Vehicle Identification Number". It's also commonly called a VIN number (redundant, but you get the point). But what is it, why do you need to know it, and how do you know where to find the VIN number? Toyota of Orlando's expert sales team is here with your complete guide to this car ownership issue. more What is a VIN? Let's start by talking about exactly what a VIN is and why it's important before we talk about where to find the VIN number. A VIN is a series of 17 numbers and letters that are assigned to a vehicle by the automotive manufacturer (i.e., Toyota). Fun fact: cars made before 1981 may actually have fewer than 17 characters in their VIN (so don't panic if you see this). This series of numbers and letters translates to who made the car and where, as well as other information about the vehicle. Here's the breakdown of how to decode your VIN: The first character indicates the continent where the car was built. The second and third characters tell you the auto manufacturer. Characters four - eight tell you the vehicle brand, engine size, and engine type. The ninth character is a security code used by the manufacturer. The tenth character tells you the model year of your Orlando Toyota. The eleventh character tells you the assembly plant. And finally, the last set of characters is a serial number that's unique to your car. No two cars have the same VIN, so your Toyota's VIN is completely unique to it (think of it like DNA). Further, your car's VIN will not change throughout your car's lifetime. It'll always be the same series of letters and numbers. Why are VINs important? Why is your VIN important and why is it critical that you at least know where to find it? You need the VIN if your car gets stolen. It'll help police identify your vehicle and hopefully, return it to you. You also need your VIN to get car insurance. Insurance companies use your VIN to match your insurance policy to your specific car. If you give them the wrong VIN, your insurance may be rendered invalid. You can pull a vehicle history report with a VIN. If you bought an Orlando used car and want to know its backstory, you can use the VIN to get a complete vehicle history report. Do you know how to tell if a vehicle is AWD by VIN? VINs can get you a lot of helpful information about your new or future car. One of the questions we hear at Toyota of Orlando is how to tell if a vehicle is AWD by VIN. Basically, all you have to do is to find this info is pull a vehicle history report (it'll tell you if your car has AWD capabilities). You can also perform a search using online tools like the Department of Transportation's VIN decoder. All you have to do is type in your VIN and you should be able to see vehicle specifications, like your drivetrain. As you can see, it's pretty helpful to know your VIN. But how do you know where to find the VIN number on your Orlando Toyota? Where to find the VIN number Now that you know why VINs are so important, let's talk about where to find the VIN number on your Toyota. Here are some of the most common places you'll find this critical car information: On a small metal plate or sticker on the driver's side door jamb Stamped on your dashboard close to the windshield on the driver's side Stamped on your Orlando Toyota's engine firewall On your vehicle title and registration paperwork On your vehicle's insurance car and insurance policy paperwork In the trunk - some automakers stamp the VIN on the inside of a car's liftgate OR on the floor next to the spare tire well On the frame - some trucks and SUVs might have the VIN stamped on the frame on the driver's side On the window sticker - when you purchase your car, you'll get a window sticker along with it and the VIN should be on there Let us help you figure out where to find the VIN number at Toyota of Orlando Still not sure where to find the VIN on your car or how to interpret your vehicle history report? Stop by Toyota of Orlando at 3575 Vineland Road. One of our sales specialists can help you find the information you need. mild hybrids vs full hybrids

What are mild hybrids, and are they right for you?

Are you thinking that a hybrid car is the next step in your ownership journey? They have a ton of perks and are becoming an increasingly popular option, especially for drivers who want to save money on gas as fuel prices climb. If you're doing your research, you might come across the term "mild hybrids". What are they, and are they the right option for your next vehicle? more What is a mild hybrid? What is a mild hybrid? Our Orlando Toyota sales experts are here to explain. A mild hybrid is similar to a traditional or full hybrid car (for your reference, Toyotas are traditional hybrids). Mild hybrids use a small electric battery and electric motor to help reduce your gas consumption. Mild hybrids also use regenerative braking to help charge the electric battery. But how are they different from full hybrid cars? Mild hybrid vs full hybrid: How do they differ? If mild hybrids have an electric motor, an electric battery, and help reduce fuel consumption, then how are they different from full hybrids like the new Orlando Toyota Prius? Here are some key points. Traditional hybrids have a larger battery and a larger electric motor - mild hybrids have smaller hybrid elements under the hood. Traditional hybrids can actually power your vehicle for short distances at very low speeds. Mild hybrids can't - they can only help start the car and assist in acceleration. Traditional hybrids also cut down on emissions because the electric motor can sometimes power the vehicle by itself. Mild hybrids don't cut down on emissions as much because they can't solely use the electric motor to power the car. Because of the two points mentioned above, traditional hybrids give you substantial fuel savings. Mild hybrids will help cut your gas costs, but not nearly as noticeably as a traditional hybrid will. What are the benefits of a mild hybrid vs full hybrid? Mild hybrids may not be as impressive as full hybrids when it comes to fuel efficiency, but they do have perks. Here are the main benefits of owning this type of electrified car: You'll get a slight bump in fuel efficiency (money is money) You'll see a slight decrease in tailpipe emissions You get a little increase in acceleration from a full stop But is this type of vehicle right for your drive time? Should you buy a mild hybrid? We might be biased because we don't sell them... but we vote no. You shouldn't buy mild hybrids if you're looking to move into the alternative fuel world. We recommend traditional hybrids like the Toyota Prius because of the increased perks you get with them. You'll get better fuel efficiency, noticeably fewer emissions, and if you buy a Toyota, major reliability. And if you shop Toyota of Orlando's hybrid inventory, you get tons of options. Here's what we've got waiting for you on our lot if you're looking for a traditional hybrid: Prius (57/56 mpg) Corolla Hybrid (53/46 mpg) Camry Hybrid (51/53 mpg) RAV4 Hybrid (41/38 mpg) Highlander Hybrid (36/35 mpg) Grand Highlander Hybrid (37/34 mpg) Corolla Cross Hybrid (45/38) Sienna (36/36 mpg) Venza (40/37 mpg) Crown (42/41 mpg) Tundra Hybrid (20/24 mpg) Sequoia Hybrid  (21/24 mpg) Plus, the upcoming 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid and Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid options. And did we mention we even have plug-in hybrids waiting for you at our Orlando Toyota dealership? These electrified Toyotas have even larger electric batteries and can power your car for longer periods at higher speeds. If you're curious, get behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius Prime or Toyota RAV4 Prime for a test drive. Test drive a hybrid today at Toyota of Orlando Still having trouble choosing between mild hybrids vs full hybrids? Let us put your mind at ease. Come see us at Toyota of Orlando with questions and take a full hybrid for a test drive to see how you like it. first speeding ticket

You got your first speeding ticket - now what?

Updated on April 22, 2026 So you got your first speeding ticket. We’ve all been there – well, at least most of us have. It can be a stressful experience, to say the least. Your heart’s racing, you’re replaying the moment in your head, and you’re probably wondering what happens next. However, we’re here to make it a little bit easier for you. Check out these tips from Toyota of Orlando on what to do when you get your first speeding ticket as well as how to avoid getting tickets at all. Before we dive into the “what now,” just know this: getting a ticket isn’t the end of the world. It’s something you can handle, and in many cases, it can even be a learning experience that helps you become a safer driver in the long run. Executive Summary: What to Do After Your First Speeding Ticket Take action quickly: A speeding ticket won’t go away on its own. Address it promptly to avoid additional fines, license points, or potential suspension in Florida. Understand your options: You can pay the fine, attend traffic school to avoid points, or fight the ticket with legal help depending on your situation. Know the impact of points: Even one ticket can add points to your license and increase your insurance rates, so it’s important to choose the best path forward. Traffic school can help: First-time offenders may benefit from a Florida-approved course to keep points off their record and refresh safe driving habits. Focus on prevention: Following speed limits, avoiding distractions, and using tools like cruise control can help you avoid future speeding tickets. When was the first speeding ticket ever written? You’re not alone in getting ticketed for speeding. The first speeding ticket ever written was handed to a man named Walter Arnold on January 28, 1896. He was traveling at 8 mph when the speed limit was 2 mph (shame) and was given the first speeding ticket ever written… which resulted in him being fined 5 shillings. Seems pretty tame compared to nowadays, right? It’s kind of funny to think about now, but even back then, speed limits existed for a reason – safety. Fast forward to today, and while cars are much more advanced, the importance of following speed limits is even greater because of traffic volume, road conditions, and pedestrian safety. What should you do when you get your first speeding ticket? The first thing to remember when you get your first speeding ticket is that it’s not just going to go away – you have to face the music and deal with it. Ignoring it can lead to much bigger issues down the road, including additional fines, a suspended license, or even a warrant in extreme cases. If you don’t take care of it, you can face points on your driver’s license, which can eventually lead to suspension of your license privileges in the state of Florida. Points on your license can also jack up your car insurance rates, which is something no one wants. Here’s how the points system works in Florida: 12 points within 12 months can lead to a 30-day suspension 18 points within 18 months can lead to a three-month suspension 24 points within 36 months can lead to a one-year suspension A speeding ticket will automatically tack 3 points on your license. Keep in mind, however, that the points can be more if you’re speeding excessively or have any other citations given to you by the officer who pulled you over. Another thing to consider is how those points can affect you long-term. Insurance companies regularly check your driving record, and even one ticket can increase your premium. That’s why it’s important to weigh your options carefully before deciding how to handle your first speeding ticket. What to Do If You Get Pulled Over If you do get pulled over, stay calm and respectful. Pull over safely, keep your hands visible, and follow the officer’s instructions. Being polite won’t necessarily get you out of a ticket, but it can make the situation smoother and less stressful for everyone involved. How do you handle a speeding ticket in Florida? Option #1: Pay the fine and move on. One option is to pay the ticket and move on with your life (and hopefully drive slower). You can pay your ticket online in Orlando – follow the instructions on the citation and make sure you pay it before the due date to avoid further problems or fines. This is usually the quickest and easiest route, especially if you don’t want to deal with court or additional steps. However, don’t forget that the points from the citation will still be added to your license and can lead to a suspension if you’re not careful. This leads us to option #2. Option #2: Pay the fine and attend traffic school. If this is your first speeding ticket, you may not know about the option of traffic school. Traffic school is a Certified Basic Driver Improvement course that’s regulated by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. It’s a four-hour course that walks you through the basics of safe, responsible driving. You do have to pay for the course, but you can take it completely online for convenience and it will allow you to avoid incurring points on your driver’s license. (Plus, it can help you avoid future tickets by refreshing your memory when it comes to safe driving and the rules of the road in Orlando.) This option is especially helpful for first-time offenders because it gives you a second chance without the long-term consequences on your driving record. However, there is a caveat – you have to take the course within 60 days of receiving your ticket. Further, you can only take the course once every 12 months, and five times within your lifetime. So while it’s a great option, it’s not something you can rely on forever. Option #3: Hire a lawyer and fight the ticket. You can always fight the ticket, too. If you feel that it was undeservedly given to you, you can show up yourself to court OR hire a Florida traffic ticket attorney to represent you in court and defend your case. An Orlando traffic ticket attorney can help reduce your fines and the number of points on your license, or even get the ticket dismissed entirely. This route may make sense if there are unique circumstances, like unclear signage or errors on the ticket. The only thing to remember is that you do have to pay the fee for the attorney, so weigh your costs. It might be cheaper to pay the fine and do traffic school unless you truly feel that the ticket was not deserved. Tips for avoiding speeding tickets Whether you’ve gotten your first speeding ticket and are trying to avoid future citations or are trying to avoid being ticketed at all, Toyota of Orlando has tips. Know the rules of the road – pay attention to the speed limit and follow it. Speed limits can change quickly, especially in construction zones or school zones, so keep an eye out for posted signs. Stay off your phone and avoid distracted driving so you can focus on safely navigating your Orlando Toyota. Even a quick glance at your phone can cause you to unintentionally speed. Come to a full stop at stop signs and red lights. Rolling stops can sometimes lead to tickets just like speeding can. Use cruise control on highways when it’s safe enough to do so – this will help regulate your speed (and save you gas, too!). It’s a simple tool that can make a big difference on long drives. Use your best defensive driving skills and pay close attention to your surroundings. Being aware of traffic flow can help you avoid speeding without even thinking about it. Another helpful tip? Give yourself extra time when heading to your destination. Rushing is one of the biggest reasons drivers end up speeding. Leaving just a few minutes earlier can help you stay calm and within the speed limit. Find a safe new Toyota at Toyota of Orlando Now that you know how to avoid and handle speeding tickets, it’s time to find a safe new Toyota to help you get the peace of mind you deserve on the road. Many newer Toyota models come equipped with advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control and speed management systems that can actually help you maintain safe driving habits. We’re open seven days a week until 10 pm at 3575 Vineland Road, just off I-4 across from the Mall at Millenia. Call us to learn more about our new cars at (407) 298-4500! FAQs: 1. How do tickets affect my car insurance? Tickets usually cause your car insurance rates to increase because they signal higher risk to insurers. The severity of the ticket (like speeding vs. reckless driving) and your driving history both impact how much your premium goes up. Minor violations may have a small effect, while major or repeated offenses can lead to significantly higher rates. 2. What are the top safe driving tips? Stay focused on the road. Avoid distractions like texting, eating, or adjusting controls while driving. Always follow speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and use your signals to communicate your actions. It also helps to stay alert to road conditions and other drivers so you can react quickly and avoid potential hazards. 3. What is distracted driving? Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from driving, such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the radio. These distractions can reduce your reaction time and awareness, increasing the risk of an accident. Even a few seconds of inattention can have serious consequences on the road.

best Tacoma roof tent

Which Toyota Tacoma rooftop tent is best?

If you're into off-roading, camping, and overlanding, then the thought of adding a roof tent for your Tacoma has probably crossed your mind (if you don't already have one). However, which one is best? How do you even begin to choose the right one for your camping adventures? Toyota of Orlando is here with answers. more What is a rooftop tent? If you're new to the game, we'll give you a crash course before we jump in. A rooftop tent is exactly what it sounds like - a tent that's mounted to the roof of your vehicle (or bed racks if you have a pickup truck). It's like having a small home away from home that's easily transported from spot to spot. Why should you consider a Tacoma rooftop tent? Here are some of the perks of adding a Tacoma rooftop tent: They're quick and easy to pack away - no messing around with poles and lines every time you stop to camp. You can simply pop the tent up and down in a matter of minutes. They're more affordable than a camper or RV. They're also a lot more portable than a camper or RV - you can still handle off-road terrain and tight spaces without worrying about how your truck + what you're towing will make it through. They're comfortable - most of them come with a built-in pad or blow-up mattress for you to sleep on, which also means one less thing to bring along for the ride when it comes to your pack list. They get you off the ground. Camping in a normal ground tent can be a great experience, but rooftop tents keep you dry, away from mud, snow, and wet ground. They're also a good way to ward off bugs, snakes, and other pests that might make their way into a ground tent. They're durable. Rooftop tents are built to withstand the elements, and will often last longer than a traditional ground tent. Plus, the view you get is a lot better - you're lifted off the ground for a higher viewpoint. Isn't that what camping's all about? There are two main types of rooftop tents - fold-out and pop-up. Both do exactly what their name denotes. Pop-up tents usually come in a hard shell. You'll also have size options - these tents can sleep anywhere from one to four people comfortably. There are cons to roof top tents; they're more expensive than a normal ground tent, and the initial install isn't a simple process. However, it's up to you to decide if it's worth it. Interior of roof-top tent with a view How fast can you assemble a rooftop tent? When you open and assemble your Tacoma rooftop tent, you can count on a quick setup. Most rooftop tents take 3-6 minutes, depending on the type of tent you have and whether or not you use a rainfly. How do you choose a Tacoma roof top tent? Now let's get into the grit of how to choose the right roof tent for your Tacoma. Here are some things to keep in mind: Size. How many people will sleep in your Tacoma roof top tent? This will help you narrow your options (and we recommend measuring carefully to make sure the sleeping arrangements will be comfortable). Weight and rack compatibility. You'll need to figure out how much weight your roof racks or bed racks can carry, as well as how much overall weight your car or truck can handle. You can check your owner's manual for this one, as well as the manual for your racks. Be sure to figure in the weight of the tent itself as well as the number of people sleeping in it. Further, make sure that the tent you choose is compatible with the racks you have. Additional living space. Do you want more living space than just a sleeping area? Some Tacoma rooftop tents offer additional awnings and rooms, or add-ons for later. This can come in handy, especially if you want a changing area or place to set up storage while you're camping. Hard top or fabric. Do you want a roof tent with a hard shell, or a lighter fabric one? It's a personal choice, but it's good to keep in mind that hard-top tents do offer more durability and longevity as the shell protects your tent from the elements more. Shipping costs. Because they're large and heavy, shipping can be pricier for a roof tent. You may want to look for a tent that you can pick up locally if you want to save some money. The best Tacoma rooftop tents So, which Tacoma rooftop tents are the best? Here are our top brands to explore: ARB FreeSpirit iKamper Overland Vehicle Systems Roam Adventure Co. These are just a few of our faves. There are endless options out there, and it really boils down to which Tacoma roof top tent meets your needs for your next overland adventure. Car roof tent for camping with 1 bedroom, suitable for 1-3 people, easy to set up and fold down, ladders and structure made of aluminum are strong.soft and selective focus. coolest car gadgets 2023

Toyota of Orlando rounds up the coolest car gadgets of 2023

It seems like cars these days get more and more tech-driven, efficient, and connected - every time you get behind the wheel, the comforts of home are never far behind, especially when you drive a new Toyota. However, no matter how cool our - or anyone else's - cars are, there's always room for improvement. Our Orlando Toyota dealership has made a list of the coolest car gadgets of 2023 for you to shop. What are the coolest car gadgets on the market right now? Car seat gap filler: You know that feeling when you're driving and all of a sudden your phone slides out of your lap and down into the black hole that exists between your seat and the center console? There's no going back - if you want your phone, you have to pull over and do a deep dive to excavate it. Well, you can avoid having that feeling ever again by buying a car seat gap filler. These handy inserts go in between your front seats and the center console so you'll never lose anything to the Marianas Trench ever again. Screen magnifier: If you've got whiny kids in the backseat, you know how rough a road trip can be... especially if you forgot the tablet. A portable screen magnifier lets you do just that - magnify whatever is playing on your phone screen 3-4 times to keep your kids entertained while you focus on hitting the highway. USB Adapter: There never seem to be enough USB ports in the car, especially when you've got a family. A USB adaptor plugs into the cigarette lighter to provide two more ports (who uses the cigarette lighter anymore, anyway?). Air purifier: Don't let your seasonal allergies slow you down (and keep your car smelling fresh in the interim) - get a portable air purifier for your Orlando Toyota. We consider this to be one of the coolest car gadgets because it plugs into your 12V outlet and releases negative ions into the air to freshen things up. Thumbs-up and Thumbs-down light: You can yell and flash rude gestures at people all you want but honestly, in our opinion, a simple thumbs-down is way more insulting. Grab a flashing thumbs-up/thumbs-down light and stick it in your back window - you can mount the remote control to your dash and hand out thumbs-downs with the press of a button. Amazon Echo Auto Gen 2: Are you a big fan of Alexa in your home? Bring her along for the ride - invest in an Amazon Echo Gen 2 adaptor for your car. This high-tech car gadget connects to your phone and your car's speakers via Bluetooth so you can stream music and podcasts, make calls, check the weather, and more while on the go. Wireless backup camera: If you're in an older model that doesn't have a backup camera and wish you did, technology can save the day. Another one of the coolest high tech car gadgets on the list is a wireless backup camera that you can add after the fact. You mount the camera on the back of your car and the corresponding screen to the dash, giving yourself a 110-degree view of everything behind you without having to shell out for a new Toyota. Wireless CarPlay Adaptor: If you're one of the people who bought your Orlando Toyota the year before wireless Apple CarPlay was a thing, we feel your pain (this writer does, at least). However, if you're sick of the cords, you can invest in a wireless CarPlay adaptor. It syncs to your Bluetooth to allow your Orlando Toyota to utilize wireless Apple CarPlay just as you would if it were hooked up via a USB cord. Travel cooler and warmer: Who doesn't want cold drinks and hot food on the go? We recommend a travel cooler and warmer. It'll hold up to twelve cans of soda and you can keep them cold with the press of a button, or keep your takeout toasty warm on the way home. It's worth the investment! Let us help you shop for the coolest car gadgets at Toyota of Orlando Have questions or want to shop for the coolest car gadgets around? Call Toyota of Orlando today. how to escape a sinking car

How to escape a sinking car: What you need to know

Updated June 19, 2026 Did you know that thousands of water-related vehicle accidents happen in the United States every year? While crashes that end up in water aren't common for most drivers, they can happen unexpectedly because of flooding, heavy rain, storm surge, washed-out roads, or accidentally driving into a body of water. So the question is, would you know how to react if your vehicle left the road, landed in water, and started to sink? At Toyota of Orlando, we believe that being prepared for emergencies is just as important as keeping up with your routine car maintenance. That's why we're sharing this guide on how to escape a sinking car so you'll have the information you need if you ever face this scary emergency. Executive Summary: Escaping a sinking vehicle depends on acting immediately and staying calm. Experts recommend remembering: “Seatbelts. Windows. Out.” Unbuckle, open or break a side window, and exit as quickly as possible before the vehicle fills with water. Time is critical. Most vehicles float briefly after entering water, often providing a small escape window of roughly 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Do not waste time calling for help, collecting belongings, or waiting for first responders. Windows are usually the best escape route. Doors quickly become difficult to open due to water pressure. If power windows fail, use a dedicated emergency escape tool with a window breaker and seatbelt cutter to exit through a side window. Do not wait for the vehicle to fill with water. Although pressure may eventually equalize, waiting increases the risk of panic, reduced visibility, cold-water exposure, and running out of air. Early escape offers the best chance of survival. Preparation can save lives. Keep an emergency escape tool in your vehicle, familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s controls, discuss emergency plans with family members, and avoid driving through flooded roads—especially in Central Florida, where heavy rain and flash flooding can occur quickly. Why Water Emergencies Can Be So Dangerous A lot of people assume that cars immediately sink when they enter deep water, but that's usually not the case. Most vehicles actually float briefly before sinking. This short floating period is the best time for you to escape! The problem is that many people lose valuable time trying to call for help, gather their personal belongings, or assess the damage to their car. In a water emergency, your first and main focus should be getting yourself and your passengers out of the car as quickly as possible. Need an easy way to remember? Commit this phrase to memory: Seatbelts. Windows. Out. Let's take a closer look at the steps - our Orlando Toyota team is here to help! How to Escape a Sinking Car in Five Steps Step #1: Stay Calm Easier said than done, we know! But staying calm is one of the most important parts of how to escape a sinking car. Panic can cause people to make bad decisions, waste energy, and lose precious oxygen. Take a deep breath and focus on what you need to do. If you have passengers, quickly explain what you're doing. A calm voice can help them stay focused and not panic. Remember: Take slow, controlled breaths Focus on one step at a time Avoid screaming or frantic movements Keep your communication short and clear The calmer you stay, the better your chances of making good decisions under pressure. Step #2: Act Quickly Time is critical! Most cars will float for only a short period of time after entering the water. In most situations, your best bet to escape occurs within the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The moment your vehicle enters the water, you should: Unbuckle your seatbelt Tell your passengers to unbuckle theirs Help any children in the car Begin preparing an exit immediately Don’t waste time: Calling someone Looking for your personal belongings Retrieving your phones or purses Waiting for first responders Emergency services might already be on the way if someone saw the accident, but your immediate priority should be getting out of the vehicle. Step #3: Know How to Exit the Car One of the most important parts of learning how to escape a sinking car is understanding that your doors are usually not your best escape route. As water surrounds your car, the outside pressure makes the doors extremely hard to open. Instead, focus on the windows! If Your Power Windows Still Work Modern power windows might still work for a short amount of time after entering the water. If the water level is still below your window controls, you should: Immediately lower the window Exit through the window Help passengers escape the same way Do this as quickly as possible before your electrical systems fail or the water pressure increases. If the Window Won't Open If your car is already sinking and the window won't roll down, you'll need to break it. This is why many safety experts recommend carrying a vehicle escape tool in your car. Popular emergency escape tools include things like: A tempered glass window breaker A seatbelt cutter Compact storage size These tools can be kept in your center console, glove compartment, or attached to your keychain. Which Window Should You Break? If possible: Break a side window Use a front side window whenever possible Avoid the windshield Windshields are designed differently than side windows and are significantly harder to break. Many car side windows use tempered glass, which shatters more easily when you hit it with your window breaking tool. If children are in the car with you, then you should: Open or break the nearest exit window Assist children first Push or guide them out of the car Exit immediately after them Having a plan before an emergency occurs can help save valuable seconds! Step #4: Don't Wait for the Car to Completely Fill with Water One of the most common myths about how to escape a sinking car is that you should wait for the car to fill with water before trying to leave. The theory is that pressure will equalize inside and outside the vehicle, making it easier to open the door. Bottom line? Yes, the pressure can equalize, but you still shouldn’t wait for that moment. It takes time You may run out of air Panic can set in Visibility becomes much worse Water temperatures might be dangerously cold Most safety organizations recommend escaping through a window as early as possible instead of waiting for the vehicle to completely fill with water. The faster you act, the better your chances of escaping safely. Step #5: Swim to Safety Once you're outside the car, focus on reaching the surface. Leave your belongings behind - they can be a dangerous distraction and even slow you down. Instead: Swim upward immediately Follow any visible light Watch for bubbles rising from the vehicle Use the bubbles to determine which direction leads to the surface After reaching the surface, you should: Move away from the car Signal for help Get to shore if possible Seek medical attention even if you feel fine Cold water, shock, and adrenaline can sometimes mask your injuries. How to Prepare Before an Emergency Happens The best time to learn how to escape a sinking car is before you ever need to. Here are some expert tips to get you planning! Keep an Escape Tool in Your Vehicle A dedicated emergency escape tool is cheap and easy to store - get one. Look for one that includes: Window-breaking capability Seatbelt cutter Easy-grip design Know Your Ride Take a few minutes to get to know your car and how to work: Window controls Door lock operation Child safety locks Rear seat access The more familiar you are with your ride, the easier it will be to react under pressure. Discuss a Plan with Family Members If you regularly travel with children, spouses, or other family members, discuss what everyone should do in a water emergency. Even a short conversation can make a huge difference during a stressful situation. Avoid Driving Through Flooded Roads Many water accidents occur because people underestimate floodwater depth. Remember that: Just a few inches of moving water can affect your control Floodwater can hide road damage. Water depth can change rapidly. When in doubt, turn around and find another route! Orlando Drivers Should Be Extra Prepared Here in Orlando, sudden thunderstorms and flash flooding can happen quickly. Low-lying roads, retention ponds, canals, and flooded intersections can create hazardous driving conditions. Being familiar with how to escape a sinking car is especially valuable for Orlando drivers who regularly see heavy rain during hurricane season and summer storms. While nobody expects to face a water emergency, having a plan and understanding how to handle it can help protect you and your passengers. Many vehicles float briefly before gradually sinking, which is why acting immediately is so important. Should I try to open the door of a sinking car? If the vehicle has just entered the water and the door can be opened immediately, it may work. However, once water pressure builds outside the vehicle, doors become extremely difficult to open. Most safety experts recommend using a window as your primary escape route. What is the best tool for escaping a sinking car? A dedicated vehicle escape tool that combines a seatbelt cutter and tempered-glass window breaker is generally considered the most effective option. Keeping one within reach of the driver's seat can help you respond quickly during an emergency.
