The exterior of the new Toyota TJ Cruiser is boxy but slightly reminiscent of the beloved Toyota FJ Cruiser. The interior seats 4, with a fold-down rear seat AND passenger seat so you can easily maximize your cargo space. However, some rumors indicate that a third-row bench seat will be an option. While the two front doors open regularly, the two back doors are sliding (like the Orlando Toyota Sienna). What about performance? So far, we know that the engine compartment opens in the opposite direction of all other Toyotas (kind of like a semi-truck). However, instead of having a V6 engine like the FJ, the new Toyota TJ Cruiser will offer a hybrid power train (similar to what the Toyota Prius brings to the table). A 1.8L powertrain and 2.0L 4-cylinder engine will likely be under the hood, which means this futuristic model will offer incredible fuel efficiency. When will it actually arrive in Japan, though? According to a recently published article from a Japanese vehicle journalism site, Toyota has made the decision to unveil the production model (not the concent model) at the Tokyo Motor Show this October, and then roll it out of production in December for it to be sold in 2020. We don't know that this car will ever make it to the US, but it WILL be built on the TNGA platform, which many production Toyotas are being built on. In fact, Toyota's headquarters in Plano, TX has already implemented a rainwater harvesting system. Step #3: To teach a recycle-first mindset. Toyota wants to increase its use of sustainable materials AND increase the life of its vehicles' parts, eliminate waste disposal via recycling, and share insights with the community. Not only do they encourage their employees to recycle, but they're also reducing raw material usage to do away with waste. Step #4: To promote biodiversity in North America. Toyota will work to protect species across the country, conserve natural habitats, and share insights to help others do the same. Did you know that two years ago, Akio Toyoda went on the record to say that Toyota needed to stop building boring cars? He basically said that he wants his company to make cars that people TRULY love, not just drive time solutions that are efficient and affordable. Toyota took him seriously, because in addition to their lineup of reliable and economical street-ready cars (for drivers like you and me), they're now building a hypercar to hit the track. Toyota of Orlando has the scoop! What will this new hypercar have to offer? First, let's delve a little into what a hypercar is. This type of vehicle is similar to a supercar (like a Porsche 911) but take the driving experience to an entirely new level (and the price tag). These types of vehicles typically have certain characteristics exclusive to them, including: They go over 200 mph... well over 200 mph. The 200 miles per hour mark is simply the cut-off but typically, hypercars can go much faster than this. They are extremely lightweight - we're talking stripped down. Most of them won't even have amenities like air conditioning or a stereo system in order to keep weight down and subsequently make them faster. They're exclusive. Hypercars aren't mass produced like Corollas or Camrys; typically only a hundred or so of each model are made and offered for sale to a very exclusive market. Your best bet at laying eyes on one is to visit a car show. Now let's talk about Toyota's new hypercar, which they've been planning for two years. It's going to be based on the Toyota Supra GR Super Sport Concept Car and was designed and built by Toyota's Gazoo Racing Division. It will likely feature a new version of the 2.4L twin turbo V6 engine that was previously found in the TS050 LMP1 Hybrid race car. And the most exciting part? Gazoo Racing is planning on racing it in the FIA World Endurance Championship for the 2020-2021 year. That also means this new vehicle will be competing against the likes of the Aston Martin Valkyrie.   But the best news yet? Le Mans hypercars have to be closely related to actual road-going versions of vehicles, which means road-going versions will have to be built before this supercar hits the track... so keep your eyes peeled, as new models and versions of the Toyota Supra may be headed our way in the future. Do you drive a manual transmission car? If so, you're definitely in the minority. According to recent research, manual transmissions are becoming less and less popular when it comes to choosing your next drivetime solution. It could be because automatic transmissions are both easier to drive and more efficient, offering a simpler and more enjoyable drive time (for some drivers, at least - some still love the thrill of driving a stick shift). Because of this lack of interest, carmakers are slowly reducing their manual ranks and not offering the option anymore to trim down inventory and simplify production. Where have all the manual transmissions gone? Toyota conducted a study to see just how uncommon manual transmissions were actually becoming, and our Orlando Toyota dealership has skimmed the highlights for you. Check it out! As of this year, the Corolla, Tacoma, Yaris, and 86 are the only cars left in this drive time configuration. All other models - including the new Orlando Toyota Supra - are available in automatic only. In 2018, just 1% of all Toyota Corollas sold were manual - that's around 2,800 vehicles total. And a lot of those were the new Corolla Hatchback, which is a car designed for driving enthusiasts who would likely choose this transmission type for a more exciting drive time. When it comes to the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Yaris, only 5% of all models sold were stick shift. In fact, so few Yaris models were sold in this transmission that it will no longer be available in 2020. Toyota will keep it as an option on the Tacoma because off-roaders tend to prefer it for more control. The 86 - our resident Orlando Toyota sports car - had a higher percentage of manual transmissions, clocking in a 33%. But conversely, that means that 67% of buyers preferred an automatic transmission with paddle shifters for more efficiency and a simpler drive time. As you can see, it looks like this particular type of transmission may be on its way out. It'll always have its place for sports car enthusiasts and truck drivers, but when it comes to the mainstream, it seems to be losing popularity. Ford no longer makes an F-150 pickup (surprisingly), and both Chevy and GMC did away with their manual transmissions for their best-selling trucks. You won't find it on most Dodges or Cadillacs, nor will you be able to pick one up if you're driving home a Ram 1500 or a Jeep Cherokee. Here are some perks to keep in mind when you start car shopping: They're typically easier to maintain - they're simple systems than automatic, and usually the clutch is the only part that really needs to be repaired (and not for a long while) You can get better fuel economy with them because you're in control of how your vehicle drives and how often it shifts, which gears it uses, etc. You have more control over your driving experience Your brakes don't wear as quickly because you can downshift to slow your vehicle They're typically cheaper than their automatic counterparts The best way to tell if this type of transmission is for you? When it comes to new Toyota minivans, the Orlando Toyota Sienna has pretty much everything you could want for a family-friendly vehicle. It's spacious and versatile on the interior, boasts top-of-the-line entertainment and safety technology, offers exceptional performance, and even looks good while doing it. However, it hasn't always been the go-to option on the market for the best minivan around - it actually replaced another great option, the Toyota Previa. Do you remember this unique Toyota minivan from back in the 1990's? What did the Toyota Previa have to offer? The Toyota Previa was first introduced in 1990 and it definitely turned heads (whether good or bad). This Orlando Toyota minivan had an interesting shape that was different from most models out on the road at that time - it was best recognized by its rounded front and back ends and the pronounced curve on the top of the van. Additionally, it was a unique vehicle because it was a mid-engined platform, which meant the inline-4-cylinder engine was actually installed under the front seats of the van rather than in the traditional front engine bay or in the back of the vehicle. Why? Toyota wanted to create a vehicle that was more balanced for better handling and a more comfortable ride. Here are some other highlights from the life of the Toyota Previa. This new Toyota minivan was introduced in 1990 to replace the Toyota Van and was significantly more popular than its predecessor. It had a short lifespan in the US (1990-1999) but is actually still in production in other parts of the world - namely, Japan and Australia. There it's known as the Toyota Estima. It's actually even been produced as a hybrid model in these particular parts of the world. It was replaced in the US by the Toyota Sienna, which was first introduced to the market in 1997 as an alternative option that was front-wheel drive and produced in the US on a Camry base. There was a problem with the mid-engined design - it sounds like a cool concept, but it actually meant there was a space limitation and you couldn't incorporate larger engine sizes (aka more horsepower and torque) into this Toyota minivan. Why was this an issue? Most of the competitors were putting V6 engines into their minivans and the Toyota Previa just couldn't fit the larger option. Toyota actually tried to fix the above problem by putting a supercharger into the mix, which brought horsepower to 158 and increased fuel efficiency. Some other cool features up for grabs on this Toyota minivan included swivel second-row seats, a dual moonroof, and a small ice-maker and refrigerator that could double as a beverage heater. Additionally, all models offered an almost panoramic view from inside due to the large windows. The Toyota Previa was officially retired in the US in 1999 to make way for the more practical Toyota Sienna... but we haven't forgotten it! Toyota has officially announced that they will be unveiling the all-new 2020 Toyota Yaris Adventure truck at the 2019 New York International Auto Show. This part-truck, part-sedan vehicle will have a two-seater cabin and a semi-roomy bed, but its real appeal will be the great fuel efficiency that it'll bring to the table. What will this Orlando Toyota truck have to offer? With the introduction of the 2020 Toyota Yaris Adventure, Toyota is actually creating an entirely new segment in the industry - the subcompact truck. Just when we thought Toyota couldn't get any cooler... They start building a MOON BUGGY. Yup, you heard us right. The automotive giant who's renowned across the planet is now working on taking their technology into space, collaborating with a space agency in Japan to create a moon buggy. Toyota of Orlando has the scoop on the Toyota lunar rover The moon buggy, which is slated to come to fruition in 2029, will be a fuel-cell-powered electric lunar rover. It can carry two people and travel thousands of miles on one charge; additionally, those two people will be able to survive without space suits on while inside the moon buggy. This is big new for astronauts, who typically can't be outside of the space station or shuttle without their suits on. Here's what our Orlando Toyota dealership knows about the new Toyota moon buggy so far: Toyota has signed on to work with JAXA, a Japanese space agency, on the project. Toyota had been looking into the possibility of building a lunar rover in 2018, but this week an agreement was signed to speed up the process and get the ball rolling. It will hopefully be launched into space in 2029, heading straight to the surface of the moon for major exploration in the 30's. It will be about 20 feet long and 17 feet wide, or the size of 2 minibuses (with a cabin that's about 140 square feet). The moon buggy will be manned and have pressurized cabins to allow for the removal of spacesuits. They would be used to explore and use the lunar surface. The vehicles will be fuel-cell and solar powered since they can travel a lot further than battery-powered cars without recharging. Toyota is estimating that each moon buggy will have a range of 6,200 miles per charge. The range is important - in the past, moon buggies had a very short range and had to return to the moon lander each night to refuel. Typically, astronauts could only get around 22 miles out of the performance. This lunar rover will be more like an RV for the astronauts. They can explore and work but then also eat and sleep inside of it, which means they can range further since they won't have to return to a base point every night. The rover will actually land independently on the moon before the astronauts arrive, and will travel independently to meet them at a predetermined destination. All in all, this collaboration means one big thing - living on the moon is closer than we thought and more of a possibility than ever before.
