Driving in winter weather is a whole different ball game, especially if you're headed out into snow, ice, or sleet. Our Orlando Toyota experts are here with tips to help you figure out what's fact and what's fiction when it comes to winter driving myths. Toyota of Orlando busts winter driving myths Myth #1: You have to warm up your car before you can drive it. Nope! This is a pretty common winter driving myth, but believe it or not, your car only needs about 20 seconds to get up and running and get oil moving through the engine. You don't have to sit and let the engine idle to be prepared for the open road - you can essentially start your car and go. (But if you still want to use this excuse to chill and scroll while you wait, we get it.) Myth #2: Pouring hot water on your windshield is an easy way to get rid of frost or ice. For the love of God, DO NOT do this. If your windshield is icy or frosted, that means the glass is cold, too. Pouring boiling or even super hot water over it will create an instant temperature change which can cause your windshield to crack or even shatter from the huge, instantaneous shift. DON'T DO IT. Break out your ice scraper or even a credit card to clear your windshield. And don't use your wipers, either - the ice can damage the blades. Myth #3: Deflate your tires to a lower PSI for better traction. Some people think that deflating their tires a little gives them better traction because the lower the PSI, the more surface area of the tire there is touching the road. Not the case - partially deflated tires actually have LESS traction because the tread can't perform as it should (and you'll also kill your fuel efficiency). Leave your tires inflated to the proper PSI! Myth #4: You can also put sandbags in your trunk for better traction. Drivers who have to deal with slippery winter driving conditions like snow and ice have probably heard the myth that putting sandbags in the trunk for extra weight will improve handling. However, as most cars today are front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, this is unnecessary and actually throws your car out of balance. This can make handling a lot more difficult than it needs to be and leave you more prone to getting into an accident. Myth #5: You can use cruise control in icy or snowy weather. NOPE. Cruise control is not meant for winter driving - it's meant for dry, clear, and flat conditions where you can easily maintain a constant speed (aka no stoplights). Cruise control in winter weather is a bad idea; when the roads are slippery, you need complete control over your vehicle at all times. Myth #6: Don't worry about winter weather if you have four-wheel drive. Again, not true. While four-wheel drive is a great quality to have in your Orlando Toyota, especially if you're driving in snow, it's not going to save you from spinning out or losing control. Toyota is all about dropping teasers these days and this week was no exception. Just when the excitement over the new GR Corolla Hot Hatch was dying down, they worked everyone up again by putting out a press release teasing a new Toyota SUV. However, all we got were a few lines of copy and one half-photo of the rear of the vehicle. Toyota of Orlando is diving into the press release AND the rumors surrounding it - buckle up! What new Toyota SUV will be introduced to the lineup? So first, let's talk about the press release itself. It came out yesterday and as noted, showcased a static image of the rear of an SUV. The headline reads "The Next Big Thing From Toyota" and the copy is scarce, only stating "Something big is coming to the Toyota SUV lineup. A clear picture will come into view soon. Stay tuned." Not much to go on, but we're ready to speculate alongside the rest of the automotive world. Here goes. In our opinion, this new Toyota SUV is one of two models: The newly redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia, or the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander. Why? Basically, since the Land Cruiser was retired in 2021 there's been a hole in the lineup for a larger SUV. Sure, we have the Sequoia, but even the 2022 model is - to put it bluntly - stale. So it stands to reason that either a completely retooled Sequoia model will be released in 2023 to freshen things up, or the new Grand Highlander will be unveiled to take the place of the old Toyota Land Cruiser. We've talked about the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia before; as we said, it's been 15 years (15!!) since the last redesign. This plush, performance-driven Orlando Toyota SUV is in major need of a facelift inside, out, and under the hood. Here's a roundup of the rumors surrounding it: It'll be redesigned for 2023 with a completely new look (likely similar to the new 2022 Toyota Tundra) and an updated interior with premium materials and top technology. It's widely speculated that the 5.7L V8 engine currently in residence will be kicked to the curb for the new turbocharged V6 option currently found in the 2022 Toyota Tundra. It could also be offered in a hybrid model, just like its truck sibling. It'll sit on the new TNGA-F platform which offers majorly updated ride comfort and safety features. But what about this Grand Highlander business? This one is PURE speculation so don't come for us if it doesn't come to fruition. The rumor is that since Toyota recently patented the "Grand Highlander" name, they might be introducing a larger, three-row Highlander option into the market. It would be slightly larger than the existing model (which to be fair, does have three rows, but the third row is a LITTLE cramped) and fit in between the current Highlander and Sequoia in the lineup. Most drivers pay pretty close attention to their car's gas gauge. After all, it's important to know when it's time to gas up so you don't find yourself stuck on the side of the road with an empty fuel tank. However, what happens when your car's gas gauge just... stops working? Remember, it's a part, and just like any other part, it can malfunction or wear out. Toyota of Orlando's service techs are here to help you figure out why your gas gauge isn't working and what to do about it. Before we can fully explain what's going on with your Orlando Toyota, we need to break down the pieces and parts involved: The most common reason for the fuel gauge to malfunction in a car is due to a bad fuel sending unit. The fuel sending unit measures the amount of gas in the tank and communicates the level to the fuel gauge in your car's dashboard. The fuel sending unit is composed of a float, a metal rod or arm, and a variable resistor. The floa t floats on top of the fuel in the tank. The float is connected to the variable resistor by the metal rod. The variable resistor connects to the gas gauge to communicate how much fuel is in the tank. The three main issue with gas gauges Now, let's talk about the issues at hand and what to do about them. Issue #1: The gauge is stuck on full. You filled up a week ago and you've been driving regularly. You know you're using full, but the gas gauge still reads completely full. No, you haven't been blessed with suddenly magically enhanced fuel efficiency - it's a lot more likely that you're having an issue with your variable resistor. It could be faulty wiring, an open circuit issue in the resistor, or rarely, just a bad gauge. Whatever it is, it's not a DIY fix and it's worth having our techs Issue #2: The gauge is stuck on empty. Conversely, you KNOW you filled up your tank (and so does your bank account). So why is your car still telling you that the tank is empty? This issue is usually caused by one of a few issues - either the float has separated from the metal arm and isn't sending any information about fuel level, the variable resistor is faulty and malfunctioning, or the wires in the system have corroded and are no longer sending information. Issue #3: The gauge swings back and forth between full and empty with no rhyme or reason. Does it feel like you're always playing a guessing game when trying to figure out how much fuel is in the tank? This is usually a result of the float "sticking" in place and then being jolted back into motion by the movement of the car. It can cause irregular readings. Another cause could be a faulty gauge itself. Whatever the issue and reason for it. this is definitely one for the experts! The Heritage Parts Catalog will now include parts for five models - the 40 Series Land Cruiser, 2000GT, A70 Series Supra, A80 Series Supra, and the AE86 Corolla. So you hit a parked car. Most of us - if not all of us - have been there. Whether you nailed someone else's car because you were in a hurry or rolled gently into it because your attention slipped for a minute, it happens. Fender benders are almost inevitable when you drive, but in this scenario, it's a little bit different than if you were to get into a car accident with another moving vehicle. The four things to do after you hit a parked car #1: Don't leave the scene of the accident even if the other car is empty. If you hit an empty parked car, do not - we repeat, do not - leave the scene of the car accident. Even if no one is injured, it will still be considered a hit and run, which is a major offense. It can result in jail time, losing your license or having it suspended, a big hike in your car insurance rates, and heavy fines. Plus, even if you think there weren't any witnesses, just keep in mind that cell phones and surveillance cameras are everywhere. Stick around and try to wait for the other driver to return to their car. #2: Document everything. While you're waiting, make good use of your time and document the car accident. You'll want to write down all the details, including: The make, model, color, and any distinguishing characteristics of the other car The date, time, and exact location of the accident What happened, in detail The names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident And on top of that, take pictures. You should photograph the damage to both your car AND the other car. #3: Make sure you leave them a note. What happens if the other person just doesn't show? Remember, the new 2022 Toyota Tundra did away with the V8 and replaced it with both a twin-turbo V6 and i-Force Max hybrid version that offer 389 hp/479 lb-ft torque and 437 hp/583 lb-ft torque, respectively. Rumor has it that the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia redesign will get both options, giving you plenty to work with. There's also a rumor going around that the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia redesign will also offer special trim-levels similar to the Toyota Tundra, including a high-end "Capstone" trim that's crammed with luxury features, as well as a performance-driven TRD Pro trim. It's going to be rocking a new look entirely. The new Toyota Tundra is angular, muscular, and aggressive looking, and all signs point to the 2023 Toyota Sequoia redesign taking the same route in terms of aesthetics. It should be introduced and brought to dealers sometime this year - we're thinking maybe mid to late summer? It will definitely be a 2023 model and should take its place in the market in the next 8-10 months.
